We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Leia Nicole a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Leia thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Along with taking care of clients, taking care of our team is one of the most important things we can do as leaders. Looking back on your journey, did you have a boss that was really great? Maybe you can tell us about that boss and what made them a wonderful person to work for?
I started my own business at age 22, so I didn’t have many bosses in my life. I worked odd jobs through school, like cleaning office buildings at night, and being a hotel housekeeper. I remember my boss at my cleaning job would let me work fast so that I could spend the rest of my time on the clock studying for tests and doing homework. One of the last days I was there, before my finals, I remember him saying, “study hard and pass that test. Get out of here and make something of yourself. You weren’t made for this, you were made for big things”. That really stuck with me, because he was one of the very few people who believed in me like that, who encouraged me to chase my goals. His belief in me helped me to believe in myself.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I originally got into massage therapy because of my mother. She has Fibromyalgia, which is a musculoskeletal condition that leaves people in chronic pain. I wanted to help her, and others like her. I started out specializing in chronic pain management, and quickly realized that if I can help my clients with their overall health and wellness, I could have a more lasting impact. This is when I became a certified personal trainer with a specialty in nutrition and weight loss management. I am now able to help my clients live more fulfilling, pain free lives with diet, exercise, mobility training and massage. My clients have been able to get off pain medication, go back to work, avoid surgery, play with their kids and grandkids, and just live life again!
Can you talk to us about your experience with selling businesses?
In 2012 I sold my day spa in Wisconsin so that I could move south. There is alot involved when it comes to selling a business. I wish I had sought out a professional, rather than trying to figure it all out myself. But you want to get a really good broker, and have all your books in order. You’ll most likely go through an audit, so make sure you have all your numbers and receipts ready to go. Be painstakingly specific in what all comes with the business, and whether or not you will provide any help with the transition post transaction. Every tiny detail matters. Getting a really good broker and lawyer to look over all paperwork is my best advice.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Customer service! Giving my clients not only the best experience, but top notch customer service is the best thing you can do to grow your business. Good customer service is hard to find these days, and with AI becoming so relevant, people are missing that human interaction. I show my clients I truly care about them, and about their experience when working with me. Due to this, I have never had to traditionally advertise… most of my clients come from word of mouth!
