We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lei Ding a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lei, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
I think the most important thing to be successful is to keep going. Anything good or bad that happens, you just keep moving. Some days you’re moving like a jet plane and others you’re on your hands and knees crawling but keep going. The people who are truly successful never stopped.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My parents and I moved here from China in 1996 with no money or connections. We came here with a couple a suitcases. Nobody even spoke the language. I vividly remember our first apartment. It was a 1 bedroom and everything in there was either donating by their coworkers or found on the street. They’re now retired and enjoying that life.
I say all of that because that’s where I got my work ethic and drive. Seeing my parents work 12+ hour days for 6 and eventually 7 days a week for 25+ years in the restaurant industry, I can only work hard.
I got into roofing by accident. I was looking for a job and roofing presented itself. I worked for a few companies before starting my own in 2021. One of the reasons why I did is because of the lack of asian representation in this industry. There weren’t any, so I wanted to change that. A lot of times in our communities, English is the second language and our elders don’t understand it as well as our native tongue. My company can communicate with them better than others that don’t employ people who speak their native tongue.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
This actually started as a side hustle. When I started, I was working for another company during the week and this on the weekends. I switched to full time a little bit later after realizing I can actually make a living. I’ve always had a talkative personality and was able to communicate well with customers.
The biggest milestone was about 2 years into this profession when I purchased a car that I always wanted as a kid. A Mercedes Benz sports car. I dreamed about that car since I was little boy. This purchase just motivated me even further to continue with roofing.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
For us, it’s word of mouth. Our first goal with homeowners is to build relationships. We try to build genuine relationships with customers. We understand that this is your home. It’s your investment. It’s where your family live. We understand all of that. We are only here to help protect what’s important to you. And I think they understand that as well. That’s why 90% of our customers refer us to at least 1 other person. Many refer us to multiple.
