We recently connected with Leena Duwadi and have shared our conversation below.
Leena, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So, folks often look at a successful business and think it became a success overnight – but that often obscures all the nitty, gritty details of everything that went into the growth phase of your business. We’d love to hear about your scaling story and how you scaled up?
I would say while building my personal brand. When I was working for a popular content marketing platform, I got many opportunities to visit places and represent the company. Gradually my professional network got stronger and that’s when I realized the value of personal branding. I started working on it. I launched a website, started blogging. I became active on social media and built my profiles on several influencer marketing sites.
I collaborated with many brands. Two marketing companies that offered me writing jobs did not look at my resume, they read me on my social media.
Leena, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I grew up writing diaries. Shaping thoughts through written words always fascinated me. My passion for words paved me numerous opportunities where I wrote a lot and learned a lot. In one of the writing courses I took, I was taught – write in such a way that a five-grader would understand. Ability to tell a powerful story in easy words is my strength.
Storytelling has a been a strong tool to share our message out there. Many businesses, brands prefer storytelling over writing. Writing for newspapers, magazines, digital platforms, etc. helped me explore the beauty of storytelling and polish my skills.
When I started personal blogging, I learned marketing too. I offer all types of writing and social media marketing services.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Content marketing business has become all about numbers. We measure the success of a content piece on the basis of the number of impressions it got. In my personal blogging journey, all I saw was how many people read my stories.
It changed a few years ago. When I wrote a series of self help articles for a couple of newspapers, I received many personal messages from readers who shared their story of how my articles made a difference in their thought process. That made a big difference in my creative journey as well.
Numbers are great to see, but the real success of a content is experienced in the influence it has created on consumers’ minds.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I started my media journey in my native language. Moving to a different country and starting a full time creative writing in English, i.e. the second language was a big challenge in itself. I worked hard to learn language and grammar. I gave myself extra time to hone my skills.
Coming to this country and continuing my career was also a challenging transition. However, I didn’t give up. I enjoy everything I do and am proud of myself.
