Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lee Newton. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Lee , thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Since I was a child I have always loved to sing and perform. My Daddy, who was a cabdriver started teaching me how to play guitar when I was seven years old. He passed away when I was 11. In high school I turned to music as a healer and it made me feel closer to him.
I went on to sing for the first time in front of a live audience when I was 14 and I was hooked. I knew there was nothing else I wanted to do in my life. I wanted to be a singer and entertainer.
Lee , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
As I have mentioned I have wanted to be a singer and performer since I was small. I was in a couple cover bands through the years, and even went and performed with three original members of Lynyrd Skynyrd. I took a couple breaks from music while raising my kids, but four years ago I hit one of the lowest times in my life. I had to leave a domestic violence marriage. I had my then four year old son. I was at my lowest time in my life. I had ran from everything I had, but God had a plan. I started writing my songs and went to Nashville to record. One of the first songs I wrote was called, Strength of a Woman”. This song has helped so many with the message it brings.
I just released my fourth studio album and now that very song has went viral and has over 50K videos made with everyone telling their story while playing my song.
I know I’m on a mission from God to share the talent he has given to me to help others.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me it’s seeing how the songs I sit and write end up helping so many others. The stories that have been sent to me is unbelievable.
I’ve had women with cancer send me their journey and tell me how my songs help them get through the day, I have people facing so many adversities send me their stories. There is nothing better than that. I love to see what I write from experience come to life and record it then to have these beautiful stories come in to me means the world. I know I’m doing exactly what I’m supposed to be doing.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
My Daddy always told me to dream big! He always believed in me and encouraged me. He said never be afraid to ask and go after what you want.
He said the worst they can say is no.
I have had so many throughout my life tell me I wasn’t good enough, that I could never get anywhere, that I could not be a singer and be a wife or mom.
What the neigh-sayers done was light my fire and add gas to my flames. I used there negative energy fuel my desires to accomplish my dreams. I wanted them to see I could do it.
There is nothing more rewarding than to see how so many great things happen from asking and everything in Gods timing come to life.
They called me a dreamer and you know what I still am today!
You can make dreams come true and I’m living proof of that.
The artist I have got to open up for including Randy Travis, Ronnie Milsap, Sara Evans, Diamond Rio, TG Sheppard and so many others and to record with Joe Bonsall from The Oak Ridge Boys, Pam Tillis, Leona Williams, T. Graham Brown,
Deborah Allen and so many more has been such a dream come true.
