We recently connected with Lee Moore and have shared our conversation below.
Lee, appreciate you joining us today. Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
Bacnaf clothing has been mischaracterized many of time because of the true meaning behind it. Many people think bacnaf is just a brand for clothes, but bacnaf is a brand that promotes art and self individuality for whoever is ready to be different. One situation that happened to me is at a vintage event i was vending for the first time with my custom clothes and while i was sitting waiting on customers one specific man came up to the booth and was looking at my items and he told me “what are you doing here? You should be at art show” that statement right there made me realize that some people understand what bacnaf means.
Lee, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
For those who may not know me my name is Ernest aka Lee, owner and founder of BACNAF CLOTHING. It was in the year 2016 where i sat and wanted to know what my purpose was in life. One day i decided to draw on a pair of clothes and when i wore them for the first time the compliments i got was crazy so that’s what made me create the brand. Bacnaf is a clothing brand that uses vintage clothes and repurposes it into a new art piece. The brand is different from others because i show the reality of “nothing is perfect” by having raw edges, not straight sewing,or something being off centered because again nothing is perfect. One thing i want people to know and understand that bacnaf is for everyone and anyone who isn’t afraid to be different.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
One way i help promote my brand to people is through social media. Social media is a big help for creators in todays world. A thing i like to do is reach out to bigger creators or artists and offer a free custom so they can see the products i make and most of the time i get a good feedback and they want to order more. One person i created a good friendship with is toosie who is a dancer from Atlanta. I’ve sent him a lot of clothes and him wearing and sharing my clothes has helped promote my brand a lot in Atlanta. So for any brand trying to make it, don’t be scared to send free items to gain traction!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
One goal that is driving me to stay creative and keep going is to of course provide for my family but most importantly send a message to the world. The message that you can’t be afraid to be you, to express yourself through clothes, and to just try different things to stand out and create your own agenda.
