We recently connected with Lee Carter and have shared our conversation below.
Lee, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
Since I was a kid, creativity has always been a part of my life. I’d sketch, draw, and create short stories inspired by my environment. I’d bury my
imagination in music & movies on television. As early as grade 4, I became
passionate about filmmaking and purchased a camcorder. Though I don’t
have a college degree, life and personal experiences have been my university.
I’ve worked many jobs but never regretted the decision to pursue the
creative path.
Lee, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Lee Carter. I’m a self-taught Makeup Artist, Drag Performer, and Painter. I’m most known for using makeup to create various illusions. What
sets me apart is knowledge with various mediums of Art. In 2009 while
working as an electrician, I discovered Houston’s Montrose scene. This is
where I started experimenting with applying makeup to myself and others.
At first my style was androgynous, it then evolved toward Drag Art. Most
performers are a one-person production team, so I had to gain a general
knowledge of the trades: creating costumes, styling wigs and editing music.
In 2012, I started producing online content on YouTube that included drag
shows and visual face art. Today, I enjoy creating illusions on canvas with
various tools including makeup and pastels.
Have you ever had to pivot?
As a gay black man in Texas, there is often rejection and discrimination in the workplace. I was pushed out of jobs due to racism and harassment. As a
result, there were hardships, and times when I didn’t believe in myself. With
the help of a mentor, I was guided to pursue career opportunities that align
with me better. It’s not about quitting, but reinventing.
In recent years, my art has expanded from face to canvas. I get excited about
exploring new avenues and ideas. My Art never stops developing.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I enjoy creating Art. I also get the opportunity to inspire others. The most rewarding thing for me as an Artist is you get to be your own creation. I
follow my enthusiasm.
