Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Leanne & Colin Brooks. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Leanne & Colin thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
The biggest risk that we have taken was making a leap of faith and investing ourselves fully into the business. We have both had full or part time jobs while working on Sweet Peach Confections on the side, and for a while we were always doubtful or afraid of losing that safety net of a job. Will there be enough orders? Will we make enough money to support our family? There is always going to be that little bit of doubt in the back of your mind when pursuing something where you can only fall back on yourself. The opportunity came around where I (Leanne) was not fully happy with the job I was in, and Colin just kept saying, “just quit, we can make it work”. It was absolutely scary to let that go, but it was the best decision I ever made. I absolutely love owning a business and getting to impact the special moments in people’s lives. Being able to fully invest my. time and effort was so impactful in being able to exponentially grow the business, and gave us the opportunity to explore other aspects and pursuits within the business as well.

Leanne & Colin, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Sweet Peach Confections was a passion project that came about by accident. My husband and I have always had a love for watching competition cooking and baking shows on TV. I come from a very large family, and one of my sisters was having her first baby and we were planning her shower. On a whim, I came out and said we were going to make a cake for the party (again we had an unhealthy obsession with cake competition shows where they make all kinds of crazy cakes!). The cake actually came out better than expected, and that was kind of us getting “bit by the bug”. For all forthcoming occasions in the family, I wanted to make desserts. We are talking baby showers, graduations, birthdays… in my massive family there was a lot of occasions to go around! Then we just kind of started doing things for friends. Then I started doing it for a little money on the side of my job and school. Everything has just kind of organically grown from there! We have grown almost entirely through referrals and social media and are still going strong!
Sweet Peach Confections specializes in all desserts custom and beautiful. As scratch bakers, we have done everything from cakes, cupcakes and cookies, to macarons, churros and cannolis. With Instagram worthy parties being all the rage, we are a one stop shop for clients to get sweets that are not just gorgeous and photo worthy, but also delicious! We pride ourselves on having all five star reviews across multiple platforms, and we attribute this to giving the best in customer service as well as product. As a husband/wife duo, we handle all aspects of the business, which means every single one of our clients gets the personal touch they are looking for to make their event one of a kind.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
I truthfully believe that our goal of providing the best possible customer service has been the most effective way of growing our clientele and business. Our line of work relies so heavily on referrals and word of mouth; We are far from the only custom cake bakery in our area, and the fact that we have invested little to no money on outside marketing speaks to the fact that we have grown very organically. Being able to provide not only a top notch product, but also that product with the highest standard of customer service is one of the main reasons we continue to grow.

How’d you meet your business partner?
My husband is both my partner in life and this business. We actually met at a bar; I am far too overconfident and challenged him to a game of pool. We started out as close friends, which developed into being coupled, to husband and wife, to parents, to business owners. It makes every aspect of the business so much easier having someone I can trust profoundly, as well as knowing they are going to have the utmost patience with me when I am having a bad week both from a personal and business standpoint.
