We recently connected with Leana Myra and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Leana , thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear your thoughts about family businesses.
I come from a line of family business. My parents were also entrepreneurs and started a fertilizer company way back in 1990, with very little money and only some hopes to be financially independent. My dad didn’t want to work for someone else- he was working in the ag industry and always behind exposed to toxic chemicals and an unhealthy workplace so he started his own organic fertilizer company- he even invented his one products and pate tented them.
Growing up I saw an example of my father chasing his dreams and becoming successful and I wanted to do the same.
I was never happy working for someone else and always felt better being a leader. I wanted to create my own rules and make my own schedule. I also wanted to do something that I loved and wouldn’t feel like work, but would feel like a privilege to do.
Photography always feel like an honor to be chosen and paid to do. It’s combined art and making a living and so because I love it so much it never feels like work.
However when you are
your own boss often times you can become a workaholic because it is very rewarding and because you do love what you do so it’s hard to draw the lines and put work down sometimes. Growing up as a child my parents worked a lot more than I wish they did and I fear that my own children experience the same thing.
That said, I think it is wonderful for them to see that I have such a huge work ethic and that what I do really makes me happy. I hope that they may follow in my footsteps either and working with me and my own business or in carving their own way and doing something independent for themselves.
I truly feel that owning your own business, is right for a person if they are disciplined, hard-working, and willing to not give up. It can be difficult because you have to be your own cheer person at times and there’s no one to pick up the pieces if you fail except yourself. But it’s also very rewarding when you have success.
I believe family business is wonderful because it keeps families together, and it also allows for more flexibility to be together when you don’t have to answer to a boss.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m waiting for Photographer for the last 16 I got into this business because I had been doing photography as a hobby for many years and I wanted to do something creative that was my own business. I capture my couples wedding moments and create a lasting legacy for them of the memories of their day and I also allowed them to relive their day and feel comfortable and happy when they’re taking photos.
I’m very proud of all the amazing couples that I’ve chosen me to capture their day and it is such an honor to be a part of such an intimate experience for people
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I have had some health problems in the past and had to take some time off which intern meant I had to start over in my business twice. I also went through Covid, which is a very hard time for photographers because weddings were not allowed during that time. But I always climbed back on my feet because at the end of the day I love what I do and I would not be the same person without it
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
The audience on social media can be difficult, but the important thing is to be consistent. If you’re just starting out on social media, the most important thing you can do is get into the habit of posting every day and not overthinking it too much. It’s better to be consistent than to be perfect, especially in the beginning. Also use social media as The audience on social media can be difficult, but the important thing is to be consistent.
