We were lucky to catch up with Leah Williamson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Leah, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Success, for me, is quite personal. The definition varies depending on who you ask. So first, I would say determine what “success” looks like for you and then go from there. In my case, success is being able to live a happy, healthy and comfortable life with my family, accomplishing goals and helping my team do the same.
Generally speaking, to be successful, you have to have a plan. A “journey” to your end goal and along the way set small goals to get you there. Determination, dedication and perseverance would be the attributes I would use to describe a successful person.
Leah, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am the proud founder and CEO of WiLo & Co. We help businesses identify, create and maintain their brand through graphic design and web development.
The journey to business owner has been a tough one. I didn’t wake up one day and decide to become an entrepreneur. I’ve had several dozens of jobs and career paths, but nothing ever felt like “me”. I have always identified as a Creative, someone who was multi-talented and could come with campaigns and solutions to problems that others wouldn’t think of. The problem with that is that a lot of “employers” take advantage of creatives. In my experience, they use multiple gifts that a person has to benefit their bottom line, but undervalues their worth. After years of feeling unappreciated, I decided to take all the experience I had from marketing, public relations, graphic design and journalism and create something for myself. Somewhere I could focus on helping entrepreneurs and small business begin their journey and get all their branding needs at a reasonable price without compromising on quality.
I have been blessed to be in business for 12 years now, formed an amazing team of creatives that are valued and can think as big as they possibly can and have support for their dreams as well. That is who/what WiLo really is. We are a team of creatives that have a true passion for helping others’ visions come to fruition.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Honestly, providing superior customer service and creating an experience that clients feel at ease with. When providing a service, it is vital that you give your clients an easy experience and make them feel as though you are working with them… not for them. It’s the camaraderie between our team and clients that keep them coming back and referring our services. As long as you have repeat clients, you will always have business.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
Start by figuring out what your Brand Culture is. Basically, decide what you want your business and office atmosphere to feel like. From there, set expectations and stick them. I’ve learned that people respond well to constancy and fairness. Personally, I make sure that every new hire is a good “fit” for our brand’s culture and not just a good applicant on paper. This allows me to curate my team’s experience as best I can. I make sure every team member knows they are valued and have a voice. My team works with me, not for me. Simple language changes like that makes a big difference. We also have monthly check-in meetings, an open-door policy, gift cards for birthdays/holidays and performance bonuses.
