We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Leah Williams. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Leah below.
Leah, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
Before starting my own business, I had been working in the corporate world as the PR representative for a private bank based in West Texas. I absolutely loved this role and being able to work with non-profits and outside organizations, manage community events, organize volunteer opportunities for employees, and design marketing campaigns. I was in this role for about 5 years before I had the itch to go and start my own business. I saw a need in my community where a lot of small businesses didn’t have an internal Marketing/PR person on their team but couldn’t afford to hire a full-time person for that role. The thought behind my business would be offering a service for small companies to contract out marketing work, either for short-term projects or monthly work in order to fill those needed gaps while making it an affordable solution. I also wanted to be able to work with different industries like I had done previously at an Advertising Agency. While my community did have a few Advertising and Marketing agencies, there was not an existing PR Agency and I wanted to bring to bring that service to West Texas.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I knew my senior year of College at the University of Arkansas that I wanted to work in the marketing world, specifically doing Advertising or PR. It took a few jobs after graduating to start doing what I really love and until then just had to build my experience and network to get where I am today. My two roles before starting my PR business was working at an Advertising Agency as an account executive and then as the PR representative for a bank based out of West Texas. I had done a variety of Marketing work over the years, but I specifically loved doing event marketing and community relations and knew that’s what I wanted my focus and specialty to be in my own business. I’ve been blessed to have had the opportunity to be part of some really fun projects and also work events involving some high profile individuals such as George W. Bush, Clay Walker, & Rick Trevino. I have been hired to help with a lot of grand opening events over the years, some being local and small businesses as well as some large franchises, such as Urban Air and Chuy’s. I pride myself in being very organized, detail-oriented, thorough, and ensuring that my client is happy with the end result. Being a local and having grown up in Midland has been very helpful in my work and being able to connect clients with other businesses and non-profits for collaborations.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I’ve been told “no” more times than I can count which I think has really made me more resilient, but a specific example would be during 2020 when Covid hit and I had no work except for one non-profit client who continued to be on retainer. I also had my daughter in early 2020 so I was navigating being a parent for the first time while also hoping and praying that this was not the end of my business. 2021 ended up being a great year for me but 2020 was a tough time. That really developed my character and also reminded me that I’m not in control and had to dig deep in my faith and just trust God with the outcome of my business.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I always operate with integrity, even if I end up not making as much money on a project if it means ensuring the client is happy. All of my work is referral-based which I am so thankful for and I think it’s because I focus on relationships and doing quality work which has followed me and always brought me business.
