Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Leah Varney. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Leah , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Success is all about determination and persistence. It’s very easy though to get discouraged if one does not view their failures as a lesson. Since I am a self taught photographer, I learned so many things the hard way and spent many hours feeling defeated and frustrated. However, giving up was never an option and no matter what hurdle I was facing, my determination was what allowed me to conquer each challenge. These challenges have all led to growth and what brings me success today.

Leah , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I began my photography journey at the beginning of 2020. I didn’t know it at the time, but this new hobby proved to be the perfect way to tap into my creative side and broaden my horizons during a time shortly thereafter that my state of mind would be tested. That year was rough for us all, and for me personally, photography gave me an outlet that I could still practice despite the restrictions. All of the free time due to “the lockdown” gave me the opportunity to focus on perfecting this new craft. I made a lot of mistakes in the beginning but as mentioned, all of these difficult lessons led me to the photographer that I am today. I am quite fearless and am willing to take on most projects regardless of my level of experience. I’ve gained a confidence that allows me to commit to projects 100%. I love trying new things and being as well rounded as possible. I often get asked what my speciality is and my response is: that I honestly love shooting ALL kinds of things. That being said though, there is a special place in my heart for more intimate style shoots such as maternity or engagement. Nothing gives me greater joy than sending beautiful finished photos to an expecting couple or two people madly in love. I think what sets me apart is my relaxed attitude and my ability to make my clients feel completely comfortable. I get to know my clients ahead of time and do my best to be clear on what their expectations are so that I can deliver the best result.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One lesson that I can share is that it’s important to always know and value your worth. Early on, I agreed to trade services that in retrospect was completely unbalanced. In their favor. The person who I made this arrangement with was demanding even MORE than what was originally agreed upon. The situation soured the relationship which was unfortunate. I realized then that I needed to be crystal clear as to future terms when it came to any trades. My time, my knowledge, my expertise, and my professionalism should always be valued high and reflected so in any trades or money transactions.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
To be honest, my marketing strategy could use a little work! I’ve got a lot of balls in the air currently, so most of my business comes directly through referrals. Although I do have a professional IG account, I wouldn’t say that I am as active as I should be. I’ve been extremely lucky that one job has always led to another which is a huge compliment. Word of mouth has been my number 1 marketing “strategy” thus far.
