We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Leah Scott. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Leah below.
Leah, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
The name Diamond in the Rough Hair Beauty was my creative way to explain the way some women feel without their extensions and lashes etc. With the proper products, treatments, and education we will be able to realize the beautiful textures of hair we were born with. Not only is it about women that may not feel up to par without the cosmetic assistance of extensions and lashes, but it expounds on the fact that we were all created to shine bright no matter where life has taken us, through the dirt, muck, and mire… dust yourself off, Diamond and shine bright as God created you to do!
“you are precious in my eyes… and I love you.”
Isaiah 43:4

Leah, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur since I was a child, and I always found ways to make extra money. I was the oldest of four children and it seemed that money was hard to come by so I made sure to do my part. I can remember enjoying the creation of a “company” and creating something that people valued enough to purchase. It also feels great to have something to call my own. A place where I couldn’t be fired or laid off.
I have been in the beauty industry professionally since 2008, but styling hair since I was 5 years old. I have a great passion for beauty and it feels like my “safe place”. I found that my love for the industry grew into a passion when I began to specialize in natural hair and the science behind healthy growing hair. In 2020 at the time of the pandemic, I was living in Los Angeles and I was laid off from my job. Most people couldn’t or were too afraid to go to a hair salon and that is where the creation of my products was founded. I figured this would be the perfect opportunity to create a product line that could be mailed with no face-to-face interaction so that men women and children could continue to have hair care in the privacy of homes. Also, after being laid off, I told myself that I would never experience that feeling of being lost and wondering where my income would come from. So I created Diamond in the Rough Beauty!
Everything about my business makes me proud. Starting an actual business is not an easy task at all. It takes a lot of patience, discipline, and focus. I am proud that my business survived the pandemic and is still around almost 3 years later. I am proud that my products are helping to heal medical issues on people’s scalps. I’m proud that a customer could grow her hair for 15 years and after using my product for 2 months her hair began to grow back. Diamond in the Rough’s biggest accomplishment to date was being featured in Voyage ATL Magazine. Being featured in a magazine made me feel like non of the hard work was in vain and that someone was watching me and were proud as well.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I was blessed to self-fund my business. I did not have any assistance. I am looking into funding currently to continue growth and rebranding.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients for my business has been word of mouth.
