We were lucky to catch up with Leah Nourse recently and have shared our conversation below.
Leah, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Joyride the Band is set to release our first full-length, studio album this month!
We recorded our first album in our friends’ basement & although we still love it, recording at Oranjudio has helped us grow so much as recoding artists & given us the opportunity to bring our songs to life more than ever before.
Since releasing our last project we recorded at Oranjudio, (our 6-track EP “Fall Through” that’s streaming now!) we have prepared 17 more songs and we’re so excited to share them.
We plan to release 2 albums, the first dropping on Black Friday this month (11/24) is called “Enjoy the Ride” which will include original material as well as one of our most loved covers, “Creep” by Radiohead. The second record will be out next spring! So stay tuned.
This ongoing project is so special to us, not only because it’s a big step for the band to release an album, but also because of the collection of music. I’ve had some of these songs in my personal collection for years! Including one that I wrote almost 10 years ago. It’s so exciting to experience a song growing & changing with you as a musician over time. The heart of the tune remains true but every little piece continues to to develop.
We can’t wait for everyone to hear “Enjoy the Ride” & can only hope our audience can feel the love we’ve poured into it.
Leah, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Leah. My brother, Jack, & I have been playing music together since we were kids. I’ve always loved to sing & when we both started learning guitar we fell in love with making music. I started writing my own music & lyrics in high school when I also started learning to play piano. Our dad is a keyboard player & was in a band when we’re were growing up so we definitely got some good guidance from him.
In college & beyond, we started performing around Columbus at local venues, recording our music & playing with other musicians (Brian, Ricky, CJ & Lee are featured on our upcoming records!) We also do private events, weddings, parties & more! Joyride, to me, is a lifestyle. Joyride the Band is my ultimate musical expression of finding identity, joy & connection. We love what we do.
You can support us by following us on social media & steaming our music! (you can find all links on our website www.joyridetheband.info). We also sell shirts we designed & hand printed ourselves – more merch coming soon.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part for me is the connection & sense of being understood. Most of my songs are written to myself in an effort to guide & encourage myself through life’s daily challenges. Even if it feels like the music is the only thing that understands me it helps, but sharing this experience with others that resonate with it makes it grow. Then, sharing that collaborative work with an bigger audience makes it grow even more. I talk a lot about connection, which can be a connection of words, ideas, emotions, journeys, people or even just notes. To me, all types of connection is what grounds us, grows us & gives us life. Of course, music is not the only medium for connection, but it’s speaks to me more than anything & it’s a universal language.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My personal goal in my creative journey is to live a life that’s aligned with my most authentic self. Ultimately, I’d love to encourage others find this as well & in the meantime I’m doing my best to lead by example. Getting to know yourself is a ever-changing, lifelong journey & the world we live in makes it difficult to even know who you are, let alone feel comfortable expressing yourself. I know that Joyride, creating music & art is what makes me feel the most like me, so I owe it to myself to do it! This is a responsibility we all have – finding joy where ever we can.
