We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Leah Murtagh a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Leah, appreciate you joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Success to me equals persistence. Successful business owners know how to manage slow seasons and quell the inevitable panic that comes with them. We continually tell ourselves we can DO this. And then we keep going on the simple actions that fuel our businesses:
—planning and responsiveness with regard to budgets and expenses
—controlling expenses where possible and making hard choices sometimes
—spending money where it makes sense, on expenses and investments that grow your revenue or increase your skills
—getting real and honest about money, pricing, debt, and offer creation (making sure that your offers are aligned for you, that you’re excited about the service or product you provide, and ensuring they are priced to account for your client capacity and a healthy profit margin.)
Success is a million tiny steps that move you closer to your goals, even when your pipeline is empty and your bank account is screaming for help. Success is defining the help you need and then asking for it. Success is trusting yourself to do the things you need to do each week at a pace that feels balanced and manageable.

Leah, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My copywriting and content strategy business (Effortless Excellence Content) found ME several years ago during the pandemic. I had recently sold my yoga studio and was writing content for a small local digital marketing agency and learning how to pivot my strong writing skills to the marketing sphere.
After several months, another boutique yoga and pilates studio owner reached out with a need for a copywriter, and that’s how I got my first private client. She liked what I did for her so much that she referred me to several other pilates/yoga studio owners, and my business was born!
I help my clients fill their classes, book out their private session calendars, fill their retreats, and sell out their teacher trainings with my email marketing, website copy, and social media strategy. I also ghost-write their books and create killer landing and sales pages, so they can take marketing off their plate and help more clients live the pain-free, adventure-rich, independent lives that result from moving WELL.
I know the mind/body and fitness industries so well after so many years as a teacher/trainer/team leader that I can write with the deep intelligence and emotion that moves a potential client to a sale. And, I love working with owners who help their clients live healthy, strong, and confident lives. Together, we really can be the change we want to see in the world.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I am a teacher and helper at heart. I am also a trauma survivor and I believe so deeply that everyone has the power to transform their bodies, minds, and whole lives to create fulfillment, purpose, meaning, and ultimately JOY every single day.
I lived out this purpose as a personal trainer, yoga teacher/trainer, and yoga studio owner for over 20 years. Though I craved a different way to make a difference after so long in direct client service that was so physical, I still love the industry and the transformations that so often take place with students and clients.
Promoting and marketing for other teachers, trainers, and healers only makes sense–and deepens my sense of purpose and reach.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I survived and healed from sexual trauma in my teens and early 20s. I’ve been married and divorced twice, with the gift of two beautiful kids along the way. Loss and rising are the norms for me. Every time I’ve encountered hiccups, it’s been intuitive to look within and use the tragedies to create meaning and evolution for myself and others. As a 48-year-old woman, I am learning every single day that it is never too late to begin again—and each time, I begin a little further ahead of where I was during the last hardship. And the hardships are becoming fewer and further between as I discover more of my strength and wisdom. This can be the pathway for all of us if we choose it.
