We were lucky to catch up with Leah Love recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Leah , thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on so far is my book titled Chocolate Affirmations. The reason why this is so meaningful to me is because I allowed myself to be completely vulnerable and share my emotions experiences in my personal journey of self-love with the world. I never really saw myself sharing that out loud. A book started out as journal entries that were made from powerful feelings and emotions I was having inside. My mother encouraged me to write a book to help inspire other women to speak their truth and fully appreciate themselves and what they have to offer to the world as well. It’s meaningful because I’m proud of the fact that through my story I can hopefully help other women grow and learn one of the hardest lessons in life and that is self-love and self-acceptance.

Leah , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I consider myself to be a multi-dimensional woman. Writing and being a creative is something that is one of my biggest passions. I’m also the owner of a health and fitness company called life with Leah. I’ve always enjoyed being physically active. I was a collegiate and professional track and field athlete. As a health and fitness business owner I practice as a certified personal trainer health, wellness coach and nutrition coach I’ve always been in love with helping others learn how to create the best version of themselves. I love what I do because there’s so much more to health than just working out. The components that make up health are physical mental and even spiritual. It’s important that we explore our strengths and weaknesses in order to try to become the best we can become. That’s what I love about health and fitness like art and creativity is also involves the mind, body and soul.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Yes! In my creative journey it’s really important for me to be authentic. The driving force behind my creativity is the need to help show black women that it is OK for us to love ourselves unapologetically and fearlessly. I don’t want young girls thinking they have to fit in a certain box in this world to be accepted. I’ve certainly felt that way myself that people have seen me as certain things and wanted to put me in different boxes and categories. That’s very limiting. I want young girls and women to know that it is OK to be multifaceted and good at more than one thing in their life or even enjoy and be passionate about many things. Our creativity is most time times our biggest superpower. I want young girls and women to know that self-expression is an important part of our identity and only we get to define what that looks like!

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Something that’s important to understand about a creative is that we eat sleep and breathe self-expression. I think those who have a more conservative viewpoint may feel that self-expression is too bold. My response to that is of course it is! Being yourself is bold. Living In your truth is bold, being who you are meant to be in this world is bold. Being bold is exactly what it takes to be an artist. We must live in the form that frees us. It’s important to live in the form that frees you from anything that doesn’t make you feel like yourself. It’s important to live in the form that frees you from anything that doesn’t make you feel whole. That’s the message I want to share with people is not to judge others for how they choose to be creative and how they choose to express themselves. We have so much more in common than we do not have in common. Being a coach, I know this first-hand. Most of us pretty much feel the same way about ourselves and about our lives but from our own personal experiences. We all have our own paths. We should all strive to live to become the boldest version of ourselves, The version that makes us the best humans we can become.
