We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Leah Ellis . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Leah below.
Leah , appreciate you joining us today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
Most scrub stores/businesses do not cover most areas when it comes to medical apparel. Most stores have unisex items, We cover both men and women. we also carry things such as ID badges lab coats, nursing jackets, and even gift cards.
The most important thing we have is we offer Embroidery services directly on our website. That means we make it extremely convenient for our customers to not have to go elsewhere. We pride ourselves into making an extremely easy for our customers to have a hassle free shopping experience. So we are considered a “one stop shop”.
We are also mobile. We come to you. Another plus for us.. we deliver to hospitals, urgent cares, nursing schools, dental offices, amongst other medical facilities: We will even deliver to your home if we have to.
We even offer Embroidery services on personal items as well. So, if a company or business, have their own jackets, polo shirts, or any other item, we personalize that too all at the same cost as our items.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Well, a little about me. I am from Atlantic City New Jersey I have one adult child who is 21 and she is also an entrepreneur. . I was a young mother 19 years old and I got to turn around and see my daughter with her business at 19. That for me was a full circle moment. I also come from a long line of family that are entrepreneurs and business owners. .
My mother, Gussie Ellis, who was a big inspiration to me, was a retail store owner . She owned candy stores in and around Atlantic City.NJ And was also into real estate . And Seeing that firsthand was extremely inspiring to me .
I have been in Healthcare my entire adult life. That’s where I’m comfortable and that’s always been my passion. I have done anywhere from Home Care to assisted-living to facility care as well. Hospice care . I started off as a home health aide/caregiver and made my way all the way up from lead caregiver to supervisor to management. And in that field or position, I was responsible for most of the caregivers schedules, reaching out to potential families for care for their loved ones. I did supervisory visits with the caregivers.. Medication intake, you name it ,I did it.
There was no limit to some of the things I have done with Healthcare and in my field. I am most proud of the integrity I have had wile working in healthcare. There were times I had to Butt heads with my own boss because I knew what was best for that client or that caregiver..I woorked on both sides of healthcare so I could speak up for both.
I have a caring spirit, and I’m extremely selfless and working in healthcare is such a rewarding thing to do.
I was terminated from my position January 2021 and I started my business March 2021. I knew I wanted something different, but wanted to stay in the realm of Healthcare.. so I said to myself why not uniform scrubs.. Before my termination, I sat in my downtime and googled everything I needed to know about the medical apparel industry,. Also, YouTube university was my best friend lol . I was SELF taught and had NO mentor,. I am so proud of the fact that I had an idea that I kept quiet about. I never told anyone family or friends. Now to see my vision from paper to reality has to be the most rewarding. Sometimes when I’m in public, I may hear someone say “hey aren’t you the scrub lady?” It’s so bittersweet to get noticed. I love most about what I do., I love how my caring nature has transitioned into my own business to where I am very passionate about my work. I keep a very open communication with all of my customers. For example, if a product may be late or delayed, they will always get an email. I have never not once responded to an email or not have reached out to a customer about their purchase or product.. I also have great reviews. If ever my customer have an issue with anything they can always return or exchange with no questions asked. I am most proud of my spirit of perseverance.. I tell people often, being an entrepreneur or business owner is not for the weak. Especially when you’re a small business still.
We are the inventory consultant, we are the customer service reps, we are the people who ship, we are the people who deliver. I tell people it is more than just seeing a posting on social media.. that’s another title that I carry. A social media marketer. I love the freedom of being able to be as creative as I want when it comes to marketing my brand..
I am a walking advertisement. And I love that when most people come up and ask, where did you get your scrubs from, I can proudly say “my website”!! that’s the best feeling in the world. There is not one day I do not promote my brand and that’ is what is MOST important. You have to market yourself.: I always say to entrepreneurs “keep promoting until they know your name, and I will see you at the top”
I would like to thank each, and every customer I have EVER had that have trusted me with providing them a great brand, and trusting my opinion . I pride myself on having great customer service . I literally get some customers that will have me walk them through what I think might be the best fit or style for them.. Hence our name : Scrubbed In Style. That makes everything I do worthwhile.. the fact they trust me into making decisions on what they wear every day is UNREAL. With Scrubbed In Style, it is fashion meets comfort! And trust, everyone will want to know where your uniforms come from!! The scrub plug, of course ! That is what I am affectionately called! March 15th 2024 will be year 3 and we are ecstatic!
Look out because we are coming to a city near you🎉🎉
I dedicate this hard work and perseverance to my friends and family back home in Atlantic City! I am doing this for you guys!Especially my MOTHER, Gussie Ellis!
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Social media is everything! Before I hit a year in business, we had customers from all over. Since we are online, we can reach anywhere in the country.. I remember vividly the first customer online was August 2021 and it was a doctor from Wisconsin. I couldn’t believe she found me..
I tell people all the time use social media to your advantage. It has many perks.. we have managed to be in over 250 groups on Facebook and we literally promote our brand that way. Our page was hacked, and we were off of social media for a little bit.. and the difference was we realized that we needed social media. We are on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. I will say I am still learning TikTok lol it’s been a challenge.. but PROMOTE your business every single day. LinkedIn and Alignable are other platforms we also have created fantastic business connections.. Paid advertisement are OK.. I feel that reels/videos are MAJOR part of social media. we also connect to our customers through emails for those who subscribe.. We always get great feedback from the customers who purchase .
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Consistency/ You have to stay consistent and committed.
