We recently connected with Leah Colvin and have shared our conversation below.
Leah, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today undefined
Owning a business in my home town has allowed me to work with the community I grew up in. Its not just about being the local florist but I get to expand by participating in different events. From putting up Christmas lights in the town park to volunteering at the high school football games. Some of my best times have been going into a Girl Scout meeting and showing them what I do.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As a florist, I create and arrange flowers for various occasions and settings. This includes designing bouquets, centerpieces, and floral decorations for events like weddings, parties, and corporate functions. I also provide advice on flower selection and care, handle orders, and manage inventory. Additionally, My day to day work on custom arrangements to match specific personal preferences, and ensure that all floral designs meet quality standards.
My personal touch, whether through exceptional customer service, custom arrangements, or a knack for creating unforgettable floral experiences.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I was open for just for a year when Covid hit. Just like every small business during this time I had to learn to navigate my way through a shut down and figure out what to do next. I was able to keep going by changing my strategy and with the help of a great community.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I was in my 30s, I found myself entering a new challenge in my career path. I was laid off from a job that I had been working since I graduated college. In the moment, I felt lost with what to do next. The company I worked for and the position I held were my comfort and I was going to have to push myself to jump out of my comfort zone. As I was exploring new options and thinking about what my next chapter looked like, my mom had been presented with an opportunity to help run the day to day operations of our home town flower shop. When she was presented with this opportunity, it felt like such a natural thing for our family. My mom accepted the opportunity and instantly brought myself and my aunt onboard to embark on this new journey. It felt like a calling for us because my grandpa (my mom’s grandpa) had a passion for plants and flowers for his whole life and passed that passion down through our family. The connection “The Shop”, as my entire family calls it, started with my mom saying “Yes” to an opportunity that in return changed my life.
After about a year of running the day to day operations, the current owner decided they were going to sell the business. I was a bit hesitant initially but knew this was no longer a job I was working, it was a passion and a joy that I wanted to continue to be a part of and felt like what I was meant to do. I opened up Trenton Floral Designs in December of 2018 and have never looked back.
“The Shop” is not only my business and place of work but it is the gathering site for family lunches, random stop in, the “go to spot” that my nieces love to spend extra time. It is truly a place in my heart and the heart of many of my family members. It has become and extension in our lives.
