We were lucky to catch up with Leah & Brandon Williams recently and have shared our conversation below.
Leah & Brandon , appreciate you joining us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
The name of our company actually came from our YouTube channel. We make fun family vlogs and videos and we took our actual names to create our YouTube name. Leah and Brandon Williams aka LAB. We are are all about family and having a strong loving relationship so we call ourselves the The Love L.A.B on YouTube and that eventually spilt over over to our business name which is In The L.A.B Media where we provide media services such as photography and videography.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Brandon and Leah Williams, we are In The L.A.B Media, llc. We provide videography, photography, graphic design and various media services. Between the both of us we have a graphic arts , advertising and production degree as well as audio engineering certifications and a whole bunch of self taught skills and experience. Growing up Leah was always into photography and designing . She would design much of the promotional material for our church and other organizations. And was very much interested in pursuing photography as a career after highschool. She was in photography club and started to really learn and love the craft. Unfortunately a family member discouraged her from taking that route and she eventually decided to do graphic design instead. She has designed for numerous brands and companies since then. Brandon always loved music, he has a gifted ear and knows how to mix and master and get things to sound right. Jump to a few years down the road, here we are married, making fun videos on YouTube and realize how much we both love to create and see the final product of our work. We’ve had many people tell us we could go into business with the skills we have but we never acted on it. One day we were literally sitting on the couch and Brandon said he wanted to take it to the next level and he wanted to purchase a high end camera. This would be a very expensive item but it would also bring our quality up. Brandon had never actually taken any classes or even really spoke about his desire to get into photography, so of course it was something that we really needed to think and pray about. We ended up purchasing the camera and really started to take the time to learn the ins and outs , of photography and videography. The love for it was already there we just needed to dig deeper into the understanding of it all so that we could really do what we love on a more professional level. Since then we have worked on many different campaigns and projects. We have been creating ads for companies and businesses. Produced and hosted a number of virtual events, we put out quality content for social channels and help companies advertise and promote themselves. In addition to this we do alot for our church organizations. Many churches may not have the technical resources or someone to create a flyer or promo for them , or to host a virtual event and we are very glad to help in those areas.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
It wasn’t until the pandemic hit that we really felt the push to switch things up. Unfortunately Leah had been let go due to the pandemic. In the midst of looking for another job, we felt God leading us into starting our business officially. It was something we always spoke about wanting to do it just seemed like we never had the time . This is when we purchased our llc, and officially became In the L.A.B Media. At that time so many things were forced to go virtual and many people didn’t know how to handle it. It was then that many opportunities came our way to help business and organizations navigate this new normal. It was bittersweet, losing a 9-5 but gaining time to work on a craft we love, and trying to finds ways to make it profitable.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
We have a son now and plan to extend our family more in the future. Our goal is to be able to be financially comfortable and set our children up for success. We also want our kids to know you can pursue what you love and what drives your interest and that you can make it profitable. Everyone’s idea of success is different , it may not be a suit wearing office job 9-5 and that is perfectly ok.
