We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lea Roman. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lea below.
Lea , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
What it takes to be successful is undying ambition and infinite risk taking. I remember at a young age, if something seemed impossible or someone told me I couldn’t, I’d find a way! Yes, sometimes, my risk taking wasn’t the best idea at the time, but I knew there was always a way to make things work. I’m the type of person that dives in head first and thrives in the land of “figuring it out”.
Lea , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Back to being a child, I grew up in the theater. I saw creativity and beauty in everything. Throughout my life, I would survive awkward stages by acting in plays, indie films, tv, etc. I told myself that acting was just for fun. In my adult life I was an office admin, clothing design assistant, marketing assistant at shoe design company (where I got Drew Barrymore interested in the brand!!!), pattern makers assistant, and most notable, I was the personal assistant on a TV show for a man who was mob boss John Gotti’s attorney in the 80’s. That job opened my eyes to a new career, Hair & Makeup! I decided to go to Cosmetology school and obtain my license. After graduating, I was whisked away into a salon. Now, being a non traditional person, it quickly became stale. I was noticing women constantly sitting in my chair apologizing for their “bad hair or “ugly wrinkles”. After I’d doll them up, they’d leave with the most confidence. 4 weeks later, they’re return for their next appointment singing the same self loathing dance. I knew something had to be done. Eventually, I created Beauty Therapy! I wanted to teach women how to LOVE themselves from the inside out. I also felt it was important to give insight on how to do their own hair and makeup in between appointments. This would empower my clients to take their expositions beauty into their own hands. I then expanded into fashion styling by helping women learn their personal color palette and how to dress their body shape. This was such a beautiful shift in my business. The feedback was rewarding. My clients began to shine unapologetically!
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
As we all know, the global pandemic forced MANY people to pivot. Unfortunately, I had to shut down my lovely beauty studio. It was a gut wrenching decision! But my personality thrived in this sink or swim environment. I quickly began creating personal videos for my clients as well as online workshops containing all the same information as one on one sessions. In fact, I felt like this was even more helpful. My clients would have something tangible to refer back to when they get in a beauty rut. Creating the videos sparked up my passion for acting. I didn’t realize how far down I suppressed my love for being in front of the camera and inspiring others. This eventually led me into working with beauty brands for free product and over the past 3 years grew into my childhood dream of being a working actor! So now I juggle my beauty business and my acting career. Sometimes these two merge and it’s definitely a dream come true.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I am a self help junkie! One person who constantly inspires me, is Jewel. Talk about being resilient. This woman went from homelessness, to famous singer, and now a mental health advocate creating a platform for health care!!! Gabrielle Bernstein got me through the pandemic. Being centered within your soul is HUGE!
One thing that REALLY shifted everything for me was working with my friend Sarah Keene who is a medium and hypnotherapist. We began hypnotherapy to increase confidence and heal parts of myself that was making successful less attainable. WOW!!! Digging deep and healing yourself will open the gateways to FLOODING success!!!! I’ve never been so confident and with that confidence so many opportunities landing in my lap. To believe in yourself is all it takes.
