We were lucky to catch up with Layla Moody recently and have shared our conversation below.
Layla , appreciate you joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
I do wish I would have began my creative career sooner. But I am a firm believer that everything happens when it supposed too. This is definitely a great time for launching a creative career with advances in technology, marketing and social media! The timing couldn’t’ve have been better for me.
Layla , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Layla Moody. I am an Interior Designer, Contemporary Abstract artist, as well as owner of ArtisticMedia, in Sugar Land, Texas. I have been involved in art and design since I was a child. From elementary school and all throughout high school, I was involved in art. In 1995, I went to The Art Institute of Houston for Visual Communications. I later changed to Photography. I completed my degrees in Business Management & Marketing in 2001. I then went back to school in 2004 for Interior Design and finished in 2006. I enjoy using both sides of my brain to integrate business and creative, which many find challenging. I pride myself on finding solutions to complex design and aesthetic situations, for my clients. With my background being in management, as well as an extensive, diverse, creative history, I think outside of common possibilities. This gives me a unique ability to intuitively give my clients exactly what they are searching for.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Personally, I occasionally struggle with communicating my emotions when overwhelmed, I will shutdown and things that are underneath the surface, will start to manifest as agitation. When I am engaging in a creative project of any kind, my mind seems at ease. It’s a emotional release that usually turns out exceptional. I do my best creative work when I am having an internal struggle. It sounds odd, but most creatives understand exactly what I’m talking about. Beauty comes out of hardship. And when a client connects on a deep level with something I have made from my heart, it is the most rewarding feeling. I feel connected to the universe.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I built my social media following, completely from scratch on Instagram, by posting my work and using the hashtags for my niche community of fellow artists and art enthusiast. I had to extensively study the platform and how the algorithm works. I’m not an expert on Instagram, but I have learned a lot from my Instagram followers. I am extremely grateful for the Instagram Art Community. They are incredibly supportive and inspiring. They also warn others of scams and scammers within the art and online community. I am still building my following. My advice for creatives is to take quality pictures of your work, start slow, post regularly, and use different hashtags. Reels and ads help build your following as well. It doesn’t happen over night, but it will happen!
