We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lawrensa Saucer a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lawrensa, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. If you’re open to it, can you talk to us about the best (or worst) investment you’ve made. What’s the backstory and the relevant context behind why you made the investment
Owning a business wasn’t something I had planned or aspired to do during my career planning years. I’ve always been passionate about working in the medical field and I currently do, However, there were other plans that were beyond my control. I never considered myself to be an entrepreneur until I became one. There was plenty room for growth (I’m committed to a lifelong journey of learning). So I needed to invest my finances and time into making me the best entrepreneur I can be; I hired a coach and sought out a mentor. It doesn’t matter how much information you have, every coach needs a coach and every person of influence needs someone that influences them. Coaching and mentorship has proven to be my greatest investment. I’m a firm believer, that if I can avoid terrible mistakes by learning from others, I lessen (not eradicate completely) how many blunders I may encounter. My coach and my mentor have kept me motivated and inspired at moments when closing the doors appeared as the best option. I recommend that if you plan to pursue anything you’ve never done before, to confide in another person that can give you the advice and guidance to grow you and advance your endeavors.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m passionate about cultivating confidence and grace, so I began teaching a youth group of primarily girls at Restoration Church of Jesus Christ in Dayton, OH. Constantly pouring into them challenged me to develop a linchpin focus on my own personal growth journey. My commitment to expanding my knowledge led to becoming a Certified Etiquette Consultant and the start of Redefining You School of Etiquette.
Redefining You School of Etiquette offers a diverse curriculum including Mastering the Art Fine Dining, Communicating Effectively with Confidence, Business Etiquette, Chivalry, Becoming Poise and Graceful, and so much more. Beyond local confines, the school empowers individuals globally, fostering self-confidence, respect, in addition to impacting their academic success. Transformations are occurring in-person and online; courses are tailored to redefine lives. Explore the journey at www.redefiningyousoe.com.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The most effective source for gaining new clients for Redefining You School of Etiquette is word of mouth, referrals and social media presence. I’m beyond grateful for my clients who spread the word of their experiences throughout their network. Resulting in a great advantage because they enter the school with a great expectation, as they should. Referrals have less trepidation which in turn, makes for a more positive buy-in. Nevertheless, social media allows for customers beyond your local region to patronize your business. I approach my virtual audience with the same passion as my local community. It brings me joy to see just how far reaching Redefining You School of Etiquette has grown.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The misconception about the phrase “if you build it, they will come” was a lesson I had to learn. It was famous quote from the movie ‘Field of Dreams’ denoting that all you have to do is put something together and people would come flocking. That’s been misunderstood by many. Business owners who have the notion that the moment they open for business customers will come from near and far just because of a business launch are greatly mistaken. I knew it would take work, consistency, dedication, and more. However, I grossly underestimated just how much you must build (actively promote and market) to make them (customers) come.
