We recently connected with Lawrence Carter and have shared our conversation below.
Lawrence, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
I began EbonVision Media because I saw a hole in the content creation industry. Most people that want to create their own content, do not have the proper guidance or funding.
Lawrence, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started EbonVision Media after years of being a hip hop artist. As an artist I was, like other up and coming artists, stuck in a development loop. I couldn’t get other people to believe in my art like I did. It was hard to get promo, and to get fans to recognize me. So to combat that, I started a magazine. COMBiNE Magazine. That led to my own radio show on A.U.M.A. Radio in College Park, Georgia. After a few years of that I decided that video production would be a better idea. 9 years after I started COMBiNE Magazine. I now have EbonVision Media.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn what help really means. Most people see help as you doing for them and that’s it. I had to recognize how I was being used and when I had nothing else to offer, these same people would move on to the next person for “help”.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I had to pivot when I first started EbonVision Media. At first it was all about film and skit type content. But after a few years I realized that my strength was in interview and podcast type content.
