We were lucky to catch up with Lawrence Cain recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lawrence, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
We start our financial education programming as early as the 3rd grade level. Most people only work with teens or adults. We pride ourselves on being able to serve families no matter the age ranges.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My background is in finance. When I was in Corporate America, I dealt with individuals twice my age who didn’t know the difference between a routing number and account number. In 2015, I started my first company, Abundance University, specializing in quality financial education for teens & young adults. I’ve also self-published 3 books since 2017, and teach our programming based on the principles in the books.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I was always addicted to social media (in a good sense lol). When I decided to start Abundance University, I knew I could utilize my social media platforms to get awareness. I first started off doing videos on Facebook every Monday called “Money Mondays”, then quickly grew to using every platform. To date, I have over 20,000 followers across my platforms.
My advice to those starting out is to be clear on what value you want to give your target market, and make adjustments along the way. Also, be CONSISTENT!
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective way of building your clientele in any industry is Direct Messaging. Rather that’s on Instagram or texting the people in your phone, it helps people feel like you’re talking to them vs. a general post that feels like “come one come all”
