Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to LaVonne Powell. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
LaVonne, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
Since my last interview with VoyageMIA, my most meaningful project has to be my debut poetry book. “Poems of Transformation” came about in 2019-2020 and has shifted some supporters at the heart. I’ve changed their minds on how I’m portrayed and treated. Family relations are explained and moments are expanded into concise stanzas for all to read. The book symbolizes the growing pains of my childhood and adulthood. Many never knew I was almost a goner or a memory. I painted the cover because the image would not leave me alone. I had to move the image of a peeling skull to a canvas and I felt a sense of relief.
In the book, you’ll find the theme of the cover, which is unfolding the layers of my persona. I changed through poems like “A Catastrophic Blessing”, “Cynthia”, “6 Months Experience”, “Transparency” and many more. You can also find most of these poems recited on YouTube. Taking my words seriously to become an author is the best part of who I am. I’ve learned to love the literature I live. I’ve elaborated on the diversity of my family and my style. Many scary stories stem from the inner cities and metropolitan areas. South Florida with such a profound gathering of immigrants and citizens, there is always something to observe and write about. Even when I took my writing skills to music, being in the most treacherous area of Florida made me the artist and author I am today.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I like to call my supporters “The Divinity” because of the viral embrace of my song “Divine Feminine Energy”. When the song charted on Apple Music for New Zealand back in 2020 and reached about 4,000 reels on Instagram. I knew there was something special about those who kept it in rotation. As I got to know the Divinity, I was told some of them wake up with the song, and it’s one of their favorites in playlisting.
Capturing the idea of those who love you and loving yourself is what the song is about. You have to be as gentle as a feminine woman and declare yourself important similar to the masculinity of a man. My delivery and cadence are soothing to listeners all over the world. Some people actually assumed I was a man, but that’s just the downfall of crisp sound quality with a low octave.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
While growing up my family had to be on governmental assistance, so keeping a job was a priority as I grew during my adolescent years. I’ve worked for family-owned businesses of all kinds, food services like; Chick-Fil-A and Chicken Kitchen. I’ve also worked in offices, libraries, and other establishments. I’ve introduced to coworkers that I’m paying my way for my career. I’ve been given the cold shoulder and met some of the greatest people I’ll never forget.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
In my opinion, the most rewarding aspect is giving people something to look forward to. Entertaining the masses and having those interesting conversations because the artwork evoked an idea or an emotion is my favorite part.
