Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to LAV!$H. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi LAV!$H, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Growing up, both of my parents were always playing music. My mom was born and raised here so she listened to a lot of 90s R&B and southern rap music, my dad on the other hand was never really a big fan of that southern rap style seeing as he’s from Flatbush, Brooklyn, he always listened to mostly reggae and dancehall but he played a lot of the early New York rap music from the 80s also. So naturally ever since I can remember I’ve been listening to and growing a love for music, anywhere I went I was listening to music so all my best memories have a song attached, and I always liked to memorize the lyrics to songs for some reason. I want to say my whole life has revolved around music, I can’t remember the last time I went somewhere or did anything without listening to music, but it wasn’t until 2014 I realized creating music was something I could actually do. My older brother, Jah The Wicked One, is solely the reason I started rapping. He started recording and mixing songs in our bedroom closet on his laptop with FL Studio, then one day he was getting ready for work I recall and before he walked out to leave he told me try to write a song that day, I said I didn’t think I could because I didn’t know how, he said just try, and I did. The first song I made was like a stoner remix of O.T. Genasis’ Cut It, I called it Spark Up and it featured my brother Jah. Although the quality was very subpar, everyone that heard the song had positive reviews and told me I should make more songs. That was when I’d say I came to the realization, if people actually like these songs I should perfect the craft and take it more seriously because it might be the way out.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I go by LAV!$H, AKA Professor LAV!$H Dumbledore, AKA 3$trap$hawty, AKA RuffKutt, AKA Top Shotta Don Gorgon. As of late I’ve been working with my friends Julian Carpio and Modern Renaissance Records on new singles and upcoming projects. Right now we’re still focusing on building a following as well as perfecting our craft by constantly creating new music and even trying new things so our sound stands out from the crowd. I’m most proud of the fact that I know so many people near my age that like me, are devoted to music and the fact we can put our minds and talents together to try and create something special.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Freedom. I can control everything about my music which allows me to experiment and try new things. I can create new sounds, blend genres, with music anything is possible and even if everyone doesn’t like it someone will somewhere.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My only goal is to be able to take care of my family, without them I wouldn’t be who I am today so I feel like I owe them the world, plus they’ve done so much for me I just want to make sure they straight forever. Everything I do is done with the intentions of bettering life’s circumstances for my family.
