We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lavar Stackhouse. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lavar below.
Hi Lavar , thanks for joining us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Dedication . Unwavering dedication to yourself and your craft. I’m a big sports guy. Mostly every great athlete (or person) that I’ve ever come across speaks on their dedication and time spent day in and day out to be great. Success is viewed differently for everyone. The path I think, is the same. Unwavering dedication.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Guess I should start with my name, Lavar Henry Stackhouse! I’m the owner of both, Attention To Detail and Poetic Pictures Photography. I’m honored to be the husband to an amazing Wife (Amanda) and my real full time job being the Father of 3 beautiful little princesses! (JaLiyah, KaMya, LoVeah) I’m originally from Whitesboro, New Jersey.
My detailing business started about 5 years ago with an epiphany while getting my car detailed at a local car wash…. While waiting over an hr…. the business idea came to me. “I can come to your house and do what these jack wagons are doing” Now here I am, 5 yrs later providing awesome details with great customer service wherever you are!
I like to say my photography career has been going my entire life. I’ve always loved capturing moments in time. Vividly remember using the old Kodak cameras as a young boy taking pictures of the marsh and the people on the jersey boardwalks as a boy. Ahh… the joys… Anywho, I’ve always been a sap for the special moments in life. Now being able to capture them for others has been amazing! I love shooting weddings the most, but anytime I can capture special moments for a family during the holidays or a birthday that brings joy to my heart just the same. Really brings those little boy with the Kodak feelings back everytime….
Like anything in life, things will be difficult at times. Rather it be broken equipment, difficult clients or jobs, a new task or place. Cherish it all. I hear athletes say a lot, “Pressure is a privilege.” I take pride in anyone using my services. That’s a privilege. Above anything else I’m obligated to provide the best customer service possible. Doing that gets me through any of those difficult times. Back to the basics. Customer service and communication.
Which leads me into what I’m most proud of. My ability to adapt and conquer. To be comfortable with being uncomfortable. There isn’t a person, place, or thing I’m not comfortable around. I take immense pride in that. I use that every day of my life. The life experiences that I’ve encountered molds everything that I do.
I have a long, long way to go to reach the ultimate goals of business. I’d love to one day open a detail supply store in the North Kansas City area so all the detailers like myself or car enthusiast in general can get their supplies more conveniently. Me and my wife have also talked about owning an event space/photography studio! The possibilities are endless. Truly looking forward to the future and having something I can give my girls to carry on for many years after me!
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
With business or in life in general, knowing yourself and your capabilities are half the battle when trying to find enjoyable work for yourself. My first 2 yrs of detailing I did exterior washes. I quickly discovered that wasn’t ideal for me and what I did. The guys I took notes from did exterior washes. So, naturally I felt I needed too as well. No, it only hindered my work and the attention I could give to the interior of the vehicle. So, after the first 2 years I became an Interior Specialist only. Knowing and understanding my capabilities has allowed me to thrive more than I ever thought I could by focusing on the main thing.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Being honest with my intentions and communication. Most importantly, taking pride in customer service and how I treat people and their space when I’m at their home or office or church. I truly feel customer service is the most important part of any business.
