We recently connected with Lavallette and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lavallette, thanks for joining us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
It’s never too early or too late to start a creative journey. I was fortunate enough to have supportive parents that helped however they could early on. The one missing piece though was a mentor, someone who had done what I was trying to do already. There’s no reason to reinvent the wheel or experience everything first hand. Having a mentor would have allowed me to find my path sooner and be successful earlier on in my journey.
Lavallette, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My personal journey into music began at a young age. I grew up in a very musical home where my parents played everything from clarinet to piano. We loved listening to records and cassettes, especially on Sunday mornings. I’ve carried my love for music through various projects and endeavors over the years. After many attempts, I finally found my sound with the help of my counterpart, Sophia. We met in 2020 and started the retrowave/synthwave band Lavallette shortly after.
We released our debut record in 2021 titled American Summer on cassette, vinyl and digital and we are currently working on material for our sophomore record. We’ve also recorded a few singles and covers including No Easy Way Out (Robert Tepper/ Rocky IV) and Running Up That Hill (Kate Bush / Stranger Things) which have received amazing responses from our fans.
If you’re looking for something that crosses retro soundtracks with pop and rock music, we may just be your new favorite band. You can find us on all streaming services such as Spotify and Apple Music as well as YouTube and Bandcamp.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
What’s most rewarding for me is when someone relates to a song. We spend countless hours writing music and telling stories. Sometimes we get lost in the process, sometimes we wonder if we will reach the person that wants or needs to hear our music, sometimes we feel unsure of where we’re headed. When someone messages us or shares a story of their own about how our music affected them, cheered them up or made them feel something, its incredibly rewarding and gives us a boost to keep going.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
We’ve had modest success on social media. The biggest thing to know is that every platform is different. For instance, instagram likes polished content while tiktok likes content that is less curated. Two things that are true for every platform. 1. Don’t use your content to sell, use it to entertain.
For us as musicians, instead of holding up our record and saying “buy this,” we create moments and use our music as a soundtrack to those moments. If all goes to plan, this generates an emotional response from our followers.
2. Consistency is key. Post post post. TikTok makes this super easy. You can post 100 times in a day, and repost those posts. The first time you post something it may get 1,000 views, the next time it may get a million. TikTok makes it really easy to engage new people and find new fans/customers.
