We were lucky to catch up with Lauxx ViXen recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lauxx, thanks for joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
A risk that I have taken in my life was moving to San Antonio, TX from Maryland. I moved here at 19 years old, and it was just me and my mom. I’ve always said that manifestation without work is nothing. So I made room for my manifestation, and I moved 1400 miles away from home. Physically leaving Maryland wasn’t hard, but leaving behind my friends, family, and the culture of the DMV was challenging. I moved with no knowledge about the music industry, and with minor stage experience. Jumping out there and performing really showed me that you literally can do whatever you set your mind to.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Dominique Jones aka Lauxx ViXen was born in Washington D.C The Jones family then shortly moved to Maryland in 2003, where Lauxx was raised. Lauxx first made an appearance in the music scene in 2018 on ’’The Blueprint Radio” show performing her first song “Scam Likely”. The artist that inspired Lauxx to start her music career include Missy Elliot, Lil Wayne, Tee Grizzley, Rico Nasty, and Willtherapper. Listening to the execution of the lyrics, showed Lauxx that you don’t have to sound like everyone else to be great. It was then, that Lauxx realized that she waned to pursue her career in the music industry. At 19 years old, Lauxx moved from Baltimore,Maryland to San Antonio, Texas to pursue her music career. Learning from trial and error, Lauxx quickly became known in the local music scene. Lauxx expanded on her knowledge in music production and creative writing, where she was featured in “The Voyage Baltimore” in September of 2021 and “The Voyage San Antonio” in July 2022.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist in my perspective, is the feeling of accomplishment I get during a performance. It’s just something about seeing the crowd genuinely enjoy themselves to my craft, that really motivates me to reach my full potential. Execution is something that’s also important when it comes to a performance. The crowd has to feel your vibe through your music, so they can really connect to the song. So with the crowd liking the song, I can confirm that my song is relatable; catchy. The love I receive when I leave the stage is also something I’m very grateful for. Ever since I started performing in San Antonio back in 2021, the community has showed me so much love and support. Seeing everyone tag me on instagram the day after, really makes me feel proud as well. I do know that 17 year old Dominique would be proud of me right now, and that is one of my greatest accomplishments.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson that I had to unlearn, was to treat everyone as a potential threat. Being a upcoming artist, you have to build relationships with people. Networking at social events with other artist, DJs, and promoters can really benefit someone’s career. So as you can imagine, your attitude can literally make or break you. Coming from the DMV area, I’m a naturally aggressive person. I’m always aware of my surroundings and energy, but I don’t always have to be in fight or flight. The energy is different in San Antonio because it’s more relaxed here. Once again, I received an abundance of love and support from there community.
