We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lauryn Williams a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lauryn, thanks for joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
In order to be successful you must be persistent and patient. It takes a lot of hard work, dedication, and determination. Timing is also a key factor along with the willingness and ability to network with others. When I first started Daddy Daughter Decor, I was very impatient because we weren’t getting orders like I thought we should. I had to learn how to be patient and trust the process. After I developed a better mindset, things began to fall into place and we moved to a different level and the business became more successful.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
We are a small Daddy and Daughter business! We create custom-painted flowerpots and flower pot art The business started in December 2019, when we decorated a Christmas bar for our house. Shortly after that, we painted a few flower pots and posted them online. We received a great response – someone even offered to buy them! This response led us to make this a business rather than just a hobby. Since then we have grown tremendously locally. We have had interviews with our local CBS and NBC news stations, a local radio station, and our neighborhood newsletter! Currently, our Jazz sculptures are on display at The Fischman Gallery located in Johnson City, Tennessee. The most common problem we have with our customers is them not knowing exactly what they want. The customer could not explain how to put their idea on a flower pot, but with our creativity, we could figure out how to create what the customer wanted. I am proud of the growth of our business, and to have our Jazz sculptures on display at The Fishman Gallery is a first-time event to be proud of and cherish. The main thing that we want our potential customers to know is that no two creations are the same – they are all uniquely made.
How’d you meet your business partner?
This one is easy – he’s my Dad! We spend a lot of time together and we wanted to create something. While I was in school, I would bring home my projects and we’d do them together. Daddy Daughter Decor really started after I took a marketing class in high school and I absolutely loved it – we’ve been creating together ever since!
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy for growing our clientele is “word of mouth.” Everywhere we go we have on our ” Daddy Daughter Decor” shirts and any chance we get we mention our business, hand out business cards, and show pictures of our products!
