We were lucky to catch up with Lauryn Bray recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lauryn, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
It depends on your definition of success. Because if material things are your idea of what success looks like, then I wouldn’t necessarily say that that is success, as you can successfully run up a credit card bill. But if you are financially free or independent. You’re debt free, you have savings stored up, you own the items out right, you are able to start giving in areas you’re passionate about, you’re turning a profit… that to me is what success looks like. And the way to achieve that kind of success is to stop spending so much of your wealth on materialistic items. Sure, everybody wants to treat themselves. But to be caught up in a store because of their marketing maneuvers, is pretty dangerous for your confidence and your pocket book. To be financially sound is more important to me than to dress to impress. But when you’re able to do both, that is what being successful is. (Also, dressing to impress doesn’t mean you have to only wear designer pieces, but it’s when you know how to pair pieces together well.)
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I wear multiple hats, but mainly I am a wardrobe stylist & photographer. I got into the fashion industry as a calling and it quickly became my passion. I love it so much!
My problem solving skills are for the low self esteemed. I help restore confidence back into their lives through their wardrobes. Clothes are supposed to work for people, people shouldn’t be working for ones closet. I help restore order back into their lives, with tasks such as cleaning out one’s closet, organizing, shopping. It’s hard work, but somebody’s gotta do it. I have gotten so much feedback from clients as they feel totally revived from working with me.
I have also started documenting clients by way of their smiles. Sure, not everyone is excited to be out in front of a camera, and yet I have gotten behind the camera, and to see the amount of confidence that comes through is astounding!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being creative is the very act of being creative. In the first chapter of the Bible, it says that God created. When I am wardrobe styling, my favorite part about seeing my creativity come to life is seeing the full unhindered confidence my client takes on after even just one session with me. When they look at the outfits I have created from within their own closets. No longer are the days of dressing by default, they now are dressing by intention. And for all of the other creative endeavors I do, I love the process throughout each project. And the Victory I have when I complete it.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Word of mouth. If each of my clients were to encourage their friends to get in contact with me, I would be one step closer to stepping away from my part time job working for someone else’s business and fully embraced my business. I love the word of mouth program as I love meeting new people and giving them hope for a new perspective.
