We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Laury Verdoux. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Laury below.
Laury, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Has Covid resulted in any major changes to your business model?
Before Covid, I had to be physically where my clients were, limiting my pool of clients. With Covid, artists and labels realized that the job of a publicist can be done remotely. While I lived in Korea (I’m French) during the pandemic, I began working with clients in the USA, Europe, and the rest of Asia. This was a significant boost, allowing me to expand my company because I was acquiring more clients through online interactions. I’m pleased that this mindset persisted even after the pandemic, although in France, some artists and labels prefer to work with professionals in the same city. Consequently, most of my clients now hail from the USA, the UK, and Asia. Covid proved that music truly has no borders and improved worldwide interactions.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
It wasn’t a smooth start for me, to say the least. I always aspired to work in the music industry, so I earned both a Bachelor’s Degree and a Master’s Degree accordingly. Unfortunately, I didn’t have any connections in the industry in my country, and initially, I was only offered unpaid internships or some form of training — which is acceptable for a few months but not for years. I held numerous unstable positions, especially with venues. Surprisingly, things took off when I went to Korea in 2020 to study music production. Since then, I’ve been fortunate enough to pursue my dream job in PR, even though I knew nothing about PR a few years ago. I find it ironic that I had to go to Korea to break into the music industry in France and beyond.
I worked within labels and PR agencies for a few years. I must admit that it was frustrating at times when I couldn’t choose which artists to work with or had to turn down super talented artists/labels because of their low budgets. So, I decided that the best way to ensure I can work with artists I like is to have my own company, Moonlight PR. It’s a huge challenge, but I can’t wait to see what the future holds for me. For those interested, we offer press coverage, radio airplay, and playlist promotion services. What truly sets Moonlight PR apart from other PR agencies is my extensive experience working on a variety of campaigns in Europe, Asia, and the USA. I understand the unique challenges in PR across different countries, which is why we excel in running successful international campaigns.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I’d say that my biggest resilience and biggest career challenge was breaking into the music industry. I struggled with limited contacts and no established network to rely on. Seriously, I remember sending out thousands of emails, hoping for an opportunity, but often receiving no response or hearing that the companies didn’t have the budget to hire someone. There was a point when I felt discouraged, and I even briefly considered switching to a different industry. My passion for music was too strong and I couldn’t picture myself doing anything else so I knew I couldn’t give up on my dreams. I persevered and continued to reach out to companies, learning from each experience, refining my approach, and expanding my knowledge and skills in the process.
Ultimately, my persistence paid off. I finally secured my first job in the music industry 3 years after I graduated. Once I was in, other opportunities arose. This experience showed me that in the face of challenges and seemingly overwhelming obstacles, unwavering commitment and relentless effort can lead to success – if you’re truly passionate, that is.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Word of mouth has proven to be the best way for me to find new clients. I believe the key to this lies in my commitment to working exclusively with artists I am genuinely passionate about. This commitment not only drives me to go above and beyond for each campaign I undertake but also instills authenticity in my work. When you are deeply passionate and genuinely invested in helping others (let’s be honest, I don’t count my hours, I’m on call 24/7), as I am with the artists I collaborate with, it becomes evident in the quality and dedication of the work.
If an artist is pleased with your work, they are likely to share their positive experiences with other artists or, later on, with labels when they sign with them. This word-of-mouth promotion is the best publicity I could ask for. I’m grateful to all the artists who gave me a chance and who don’t hesitate to speak about me and Moonlight PR to others.
