We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Laurène Vanlichtervelde a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Laurène thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been one of the most interesting investments you’ve made – and did you win or lose? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
Moving abroad was the best investment I’ve made in myself and in my business. Living abroad helped in personal growth, to learn more about myself but also gave me more opportunities in my work than just on one territories.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Originally from France, I’m a music agent based in Los Angeles, CA. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Arts and a Master’s degree in Management of Cultural Projects and Institutions from the University of Dunkirk, France. I also have a Music Business Certificate from the University of California, Los Angeles Extension, awarded with Distinction. The past decade, I worked as a music agent in collaboration with multiples music venues and festivals in France and Europe. I managed music tour for different European bands in France.
I joined one of America’s leading entertainment companies, Artist Worldwide Agency, in 2021, where I’m responsible for the strategic planning and execution of national tours across the United States while serving as talent agent for artists both in the U.S and Europe.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
The “How to be your own booking agent” by Jeri Goldstein is probably the only book about Touring that helped me the most. I read it during the pandemic situation and helped me to continue doing what I love to do.
Also, “Touring and Mental Health: The Music Industry Manual” by Tamsin Embleton is a great book to learn about to cope with the various physical and psychological difficulties that can occur during, or as a result of, touring.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Networking. The more I spend in the music business here in the U.S, I realize how small the industry is actually is. Meeting managers or other agents is the best way to grow in the industry.
