We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Laurence Sevy. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Laurence below.
Laurence, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard.
I truly believe our physical spaces impact our personal wellbeing. So with Quietly, I take a holistic approach to interiors. It means that my designs don’t only focus on aesthetics but also on how spaces make you feel. I design homes that foster good energy, reconnect you with nature, and balance your physical, mental and spiritual wellness. For example, I use meditation in consultations with my clients. It helps them connect to their intuition, so I can give their project an intention.
My work is very personal but I also make sure it’s evidence-based. And relatable. I often use research on how colours, materials, and finishes affect our blood pressure, stress levels, heart rate, or else. Fro example, the air in our interiors is 2 to 5 times more polluted than the air outside, yet, we spend about 90% of our time indoors. That tells you how essential it is to make considered choices that are good for your home but also for the world… That’s why I use natural, toxin-free, air-purifying materials.
In short, I use my experience and knowledge to create healthy environments that help bring wellness within your walls.

Laurence, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve worked in the field of design and interiors my entire career. About 20-odd years! Meanwhile, I was always dedicated to my own sense of contentment and inner growth. Yoga and meditation are an integral part of my life, but I also need a serene, calming environment to feel grounded. I often say that your home needs to be part of your wellness routine. If you eat healthy, go to acupuncture, do reiki, but come home to a space you feel stressed in, you lose the benefits of all these balancing practices…
So I design spaces that are simple, calming, with natural materials that age gracefully and support our physical and mental health. I really want to help people live better in their homes. I help them simplify their interiors, eliminate clutter and create a home with soul, keeping the crap away and the sacred close! Durability is at the core of my work too. Every choice I make is carefully considered and I encourage clients to consume responsibly in the long term, for their own health and for the health of the planet. I use non-toxic paints, non-treated natural textiles, and textured surfaces that provide sensorial experiences. Studies have shown that seeing, smelling, and touching nature has a profound effect on our neurological system. It balances the chemicals in our bodies, and gives us a better chance to alleviate stressors. Isn’t it fascinating?
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I believe design can change the world for the better. Like everyone, I have days where I see the future as pretty grim and I feel terrible about the mess our children will inherit! But there are other days when I see all the amazing ideas and solutions that are coming out and I feel an incredible hope. Education and design have exciting roles to play. There are already so many wonderful initiatives and projects that are offering real solutions. What we need now is for them to go mainstream. That’s why supporting the work of artisans, designers, and brands conveying the same values and ideas I believe in is essential for me. As an interior designer and writer, I have the opportunity to do so. I use organic, durable, and circular products in my interiors, while I report on these same meaningful initiatives for design magazines as well as for my own blog, quiet-ly.com/blog. I also run group workshops where I share tips on how to consume responsibly and buy less but better.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
A little over 5 years ago, I went to Tel Aviv on holiday. And I met my now husband! Sooo… I am still here, and this is where I run my business. After 15-odd years working and living between Paris and London, this was quite an adjustment! The market for design is very different here with a myriad of independent makers but barely any actual industry (no local furniture manufacturing for example). So the awareness of durability and sustainability is still on a very small scale. In Europe, I was one amongst many, but here I feel a bigger responsibility in this mission to drive change for the better.
