We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lauren Wesson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lauren, appreciate you joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I was laid off from my job at the time with no warning and wanted to test things out that I could do without having a job. I started doing cupcakes and chocolate covered strawberries and they turned out good so it all started from there.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started doing sweets and custom cakes from home and then it got too busy and I opened a shop. I think what sets me apart from others is I’m always willing to take on as much work as I can. The words “we are booked” rarely are said here. We are also open every single day 9am-1am.
We specialize in custom cakes but have things like brownies, cupcakes, cookies, ice cream, funnel cakes, etc available daily.
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
Yes it did. I had a job that I was let go from with no warning and that encouraged me to not want another job. Having bills with no where to turn is not a good feeling: while I still face and deal with many obstacles being self employed it is far better than any job I have ever had. I think being consistent and not giving up got my business to where it is today.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Over the years of having a store; there has been many times where the prices of products I need have inflated to the point where I wouldn’t even make a profit at times trying to avoid raising prices & scaring customers off. A lot of times business has got slow & me knowing how it is without a job you were depending on (instead of laying my employees off I will figure out ways to pay them even when business isn’t doing so good at the time so they don’t have to worry about not having the hours they’re expected.) there has been a lot of hard times but I still stand strong and consistent with my business because I refuse to give up.
