We recently connected with Lauren Tucker and have shared our conversation below.
Lauren, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I knew that homemaking was my calling, for 100% certain, as I was flying to Vancouver to meet my future Husband.
A little background, I grew up in Ontario, Canada and figure skating was my primary pastime growing up. When I got older, I decided to follow my dream of becoming a professional figure skating coach, which I accomplished and thrived in. I met my husband as I was knocking on the door to 30. When we met I had been coaching full time, 7 days a week, for many many years, and was frankly burnt out and tired.
After meeting my husband it became clear that I would be moving to California, and I would either need to gain additional certification in the United States, starting from basically the beginning, OR retire.
But the thought of retirement haunted me. What would I do? Surely I would need a career in this new chapter of my life?
But during that flight as I sat looking out the window of the plane, wrestling with this question and ultimately giving it up to God, it struck me with such clarity that I should be a homemaker. Clarity so crystal clear that it made me laugh.
Something i had never considered at ALL in my past growing up, but in that moment i Knew with 100% certainty, that my calling was to be a homemaker and mother.
When I landed in Vancouver it took some courage to pose my new found idea to my future Husband! I was nervous and didn’t know how he would react to my decisions. But, with his big smile and beautiful eyes proclaimed loudly “LETS DO IT” and thus started my journey.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I began my blogging journey and instagram account in 2016, before my daughter was born. Originally, I had branded myself “An Organized Life” and shared on social media and my blog about my life in California as an expat and a new daughter, learning to organize our new home and life. An Organized LIfe blossomed and with the help of a shout out from Marie Kondo, my account grew to about 80,000 followers.
In July 2022, I felt a push to move forward with my creative outlet and start something fresh. I began ‘The Calm Homemaker’ and suspended my other accounts. I wanted a space where I could create more freely and beautifully, share content that included all aspects of homemaking (not just organizing!) and connect with people that may also be sitting on that fence of becoming a homemaker in a new chapter of their lives.
I have never monetized my accounts, and continue to operate The Calm Homemaker from a place of education, and the belief that my knowledge should be given freely and without a price tag.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My primary mission with The Calm Homemaker is to create content that can be of help to all homemakers. Full time, part time, inbetween, trying to figure this whole thing out. When I first became a homemaker, trying to find information and resources was a huge pain. Simple questions seemed the hardest to find answers too, or I felt silly asking. With my account I try and provide a wide variety of information that can be applied simply, without cost and a huge amount of energy to make managing and caring for the home easier.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Canva. I’m not sure if even Canva was around in 2016, but it is one application that I now can’t live without! I use it for everything; homeschool resources, all resources for The Calm Homemaker (blog, social etc), volunteer work that I do for our Church, literally everything.
