We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lauren Triplett. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lauren below.
Hi Lauren, thanks for joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
When I finished my MBA in 2017, I knew that I wanted to transition to a marketing career, but I also knew that I needed more experience. Someone suggested that I help non-profits with marketing. I went to volunteer.org, and found an organization in Leimert Park that was looking for marketing help. The next month, I was working with them helping them expand their digital & traditional marketing strategies. A few months laters, I started working with another organization in Downtown Los Angeles that I connected with during a non-profit networking event. I really enjoyed the work that I did for these companies, and I wanted a way to infuse my love for marketing strategy with helping organizations and individuals that couldn’t afford the big name agencies in the area. My 2 clients told me that I could absolutely charge for what I was doing, and I thought “that’s a great idea!”. I decided to keep my prices affordable, and in June 2020, BiteSized Consulting was born to help BIPOD & femme owned business create a unique connection with their audience.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’ve always wanted to be a business owner. I was the kid who wrote a full business plan for a digital magazine when I was 13. Back then in the 90s, it was a unique idea (not so much anymore – I was ahead of time!). While I wanted to be a business owner, it wouldn’t be until almost 10 years later that I realized Marketing was my calling. After 3 years of pursuing a double major in Economics & Sales, I couldn’t quite figure out how to use both of those skillsets simultaneously until I took my first marketing class. I realized that marketing was the bridge between the analytics/behavioral economics and the sales/people skills. After graduating, I spent a lot of time in retail management using my analytical brain to effectively make sales, but I knew that I wanted more. I’m glad that I took the leap of faith to move to California, pursue my masters, and follow my dreams. Now, I get to do what I love every day.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I’ve really had to unlearn “grind” and “hustle” culture. I’ve learned that balance and happiness are truly the keys to success for me. The moment I started prioritizing balance and happiness, I noticed an immediate shift in my business and my life. I’ve recently had a number of people that I was very close to pass away, and truly nothing puts balance into perspective more than traumatic events. Today, my business is thriving and growing because I’m allowing myself to work on projects I love, not just “popular” offerings in the industry. I think that also allows me to focus my business on helping business owners because I have the time to dedicate to creating products & services that are beneficial to their company growth.
How did you build your audience on social media?
For both my personal account and my business account, I take the route of authenticity. There are enough brands and organizations selling us a dream, so be yourself! Let your authentic self shine, and the right people will connect with that. I’d also say that consistency is king for business accounts. Figure out a rhythm, schedule, and post type that works for you. For instance, one of my clients posted 3 times a week: 1 photo, 1 reel, and 1 carousel. He grew his following from0 to over 1,000 in the span of 4 months with 0 ads. He focused on the things he loved – beer and records. To no one’s surprise, the beer and record community responded positively, my client engaged with them authentically, and his account is continuing to grow because he’s sharing his authentic self.
