Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lauren Shippy. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lauren, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
I knew that I wanted to help people figure out who they truly were and where they were headed. Throughout our careers and lives, that can look very different as we enter into new seasons. When I started thinking about the name, I thought about my love for drawing stories, themes and puzzle pieces out of people through a process, and putting them to work – and that’s how StoryWork came to be. It was and still is a company that is meant to highlight people’s stories, and put them to work through the business, movement or nonprofits they create.

Lauren, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a wife, mom and a creator and builder of new things. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to be a part of building many different types of businesses and nonprofits, and I love getting to be a part of the process, because of the journey I can walk through with leaders who want clarity. Clarity can be hard to come by, especially in a world filled with distraction and constant demand. It’s my favorite thing to create space for people to come and reflect, process, brainstorm, dream and refine their “map” until it hits just right.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Probably the biggest lesson is the expectation of a timeline. Because what we do involves people – it can’t be fit into a box. People are moving through a process at their specific pace, with all of the puzzle pieces that make up their life, as well as external circumstances. So all of those factors come into play when designing new things, it can’t be rushed.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think just consistently showing up, building new things that truly add value to the community over the years, and really seeking to know the people around us and how I can make connections for them that can grow their businesses. It’s just about being genuine and not forcing things, but always opening doors for others when it comes.
