Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lauren Scorey. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lauren, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
One of the most meaningful projects I have worked on is end-of-life sessions, where owners trust me to capture photos with their pets before they cross the rainbow bridge. These sessions are special to me as they provide an opportunity for owners to create happy memories during a time that can be filled with grief.
Some clients approach me with pets who are facing health issues, which is particularly challenging when dealing with younger dogs. Encouraging owners to bring things like a pup cup helps keep the session positive, and even senior dogs go back to being a puppy for their favorite treats.
Through these sessions, I’ve seen how these photographs have helped owners through the grieving process. In instances of health concerns, I am able to do digital retouching to conceal things such as sutures, helping them remember how their dog were.
As a fellow dog owner, I can empathize with the difficulty of losing a pet. These sessions aren’t only about providing a service, they are a personal understanding of the importance of keeping memories for those moments when our best friends are no longer with us.
Lauren, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a pet and Family photographer in the San Antonio, who enjoys adventures and is obsessed with animals. I also run a dog influencer account @scoreyspack, where I combine my love for these two things. It’s through my instagram that I really started focusing more on making photography into a paid opportunity.
One of the main things that sets me apart from other pet photographers is that as a trainer, dog sport hobbyist and owner, I am comfortable helping my clients with their pets doing shoots, anything from dogs and cats to horses and other livestock animals. I have an understanding of animal needs and body language, which also helps set our session up for success.
This might seem surprising, but I’m a pretty introverted person. I’m now at a point where I have been able to expand the services I offer, so I’ve been able to meet a variety of like minded people through color shoots, litter photography, pet and family shoots and dog sports. Photography has let me come out of my shell, and meet so many new people that I might not have otherwise. Most of my clients leave as friends, and end up referring their friends, which is the greatest compliment I could receive.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effect strategy for expanding my clientele has been through referrals, primarily driven by word of mouth. Establishing strong relationships with clients has resulted in a network of repeat business. Many of my clients are friends of other clients!
Active involvement in the dog community, particularly in dog sports like fast cat and dock diving, has played a crucial role in spreading awareness about my photography services. My goal for 2024 is to photograph more dog sport trials, especially agility.
Additionally, tapping into local Facebook groups for dog lovers, such as ‘San Antonio Dog Moms,’ has proven to be a helpful asset when connecting to other people who love their dogs. I love what I do, so it is great working around likeminded people.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I love being able to have a concept from my mind and bring it to life. Moving seamlessly from idea to execution is incredibly fulfilling, and is a great way to flex my creative muscles.
I also really appreciate the entire client journey. From our initial consultation all the way to gallery delivery, the trust that clients place in me to capture those special moments and the relationship we build is special. It’s especially rewarding to me when they share that they’re printed photos from our sessions and placed them in their home.
