We recently connected with Lauren Scorey and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lauren , thanks for joining us today. Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?
I’ve wanted to do photography since I was in high school. Some of my favorite memories are of my dad letting me use his “fancy” camera. I’d take pictures of wildlife, of nature, our family pets… really whatever was available. There’s something special about being behind the camera and being able to create these memories for people. It wasn’t until last year that I really started moving from taking pictures of just my personal dogs to making this into a business venture. At the beginning of the year, I made a list of things I wanted to accomplish, and the end goal was to start a business and make money doing something I loved. It started with capturing friends and family and has grown from there.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a dog photographer in the San Antonio, who has a knack for adventures and is obsessed with animals. I also run a dog influencer account @scoreyspack, where I combine my love for these two things. It’s through my instagram that I really started focusing more on making photography into a paid hustle.
One of the main things that sets me apart from other pet photographers is that as a trainer, dog sport hobbyist and owner, I am comfortable helping my clients with their dogs doing shoots (even the spicy ones). I have an understanding of the dog’s needs and body language, which also helps set our session up for success.
This might seem surprising, but I’m a pretty introverted person. I’m now at a point where I have been able to expand the services I offer, so I’ve been able to meet a variety of like minded people through color shoots, litter photography, pet and family shoots and sports. Photography has let me come out of my shell, and meet so many new people that I might not have otherwise. Most of my clients leave as friends, and end up referring their friends, which is the greatest compliment I could receive.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
My social media journey started with my first dog, Kona. I shared our adventures together, and I feel like people enjoyed seeing the day to day life of dog ownership. Engagement was also really important to me, and I made sure to develop rapport with the people who were commenting on my posts. I sometimes laugh when I look back at the pictures from the beginning. Needless to say, my skills have improved. Instagram also helped me to realize how to monetize my talents – the more I grew, the more brands wanted to collaborate with me, and I was able to make that a side hustle.
My advice to someone starting out on Instagram is find your niche and find your people. If you have something specific that you are interested in or good at, carve your path in that space. Once you’ve done that, be authentic and engage with your followers! Having good rapport will make people want to share your account, and from that you’ll just keep expanding.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to continue to build a community of people who are proud to share their work, and aren’t afraid to pursue their creative passions. There have been so many times where followers have tagged me saying that I have inspired them to create something, even if they aren’t someone I have booked with. That’s really what it’s all about. Also, as much as I wish that love kept dogs alive forever, they are only here for a limited amount of time. By being able to capture photographs of client dogs, I’m able to provide them with memories that last a lifetime, and that is something very special to me.
As for a personal goal that I have, I would love to continue to fine-tune my skills and eventually have my photography be featured in a major publication.
