We recently connected with Lauren Russell and have shared our conversation below.
Lauren, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
When asked about what my parents did right, it’s a complex question because their impact on my life was largely defined by what they didn’t do. Rather than focusing on direct positive actions, my story revolves around how their shortcomings ultimately shaped my journey in art and aesthetics.
One of the most significant ways they impacted me was by providing a challenging environment that fostered my self-reliance. Growing up, my parents were often absent in terms of emotional support and practical guidance. This lack of involvement in my creative pursuits and career goals meant that I had to chart my own course from a very young age.
I remember a particular moment during my teenage years when I verbalized wanting to pursue a career in art and beauty but faced strong resistance from them. They couldn’t see the value in art and beauty as a viable career path, and their disapproval was disheartening. However, this opposition became a driving force for me. It pushed me to seek out like-minded people, education, and develop my own voice as an artist. Their lack of support compelled me to cultivate a deeper sense of determination and independence.
Another impactful aspect was their failure to provide financial stability. This adversity, though difficult at the time, taught me resourcefulness. I learned to budget carefully, work hard, and even find unconventional ways to fund my artistic and aesthetic endeavors. This financial struggle instilled in me a strong work ethic and an appreciation for every opportunity I earned.
Through these experiences, I developed resilience and adaptability—qualities that have become central to my career. The difficulties I faced forced me to become self-sufficient and to learn how to turn obstacles into opportunities.
So, while my parents didn’t provide the traditional forms of support and encouragement, their shortcomings inadvertently set the stage for my growth. The challenges they presented became the crucible in which my resilience and creativity were forged. Their impact is a testament to how even the most difficult circumstances can lead to profound personal and professional development.

Lauren, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Lo Artistry! And my name is Lauren/Lo. I started pursuing art mediums at a young age and always knew it was something I was passionate about. I also knew from a young age I wanted to work with people and provide services that have an impact.
I went to beauty school shortly after graduating high school where I became a licensed esthetician. I continued my education with permanent makeup certifications and quickly dove into the world of taking clients and starting my own small business. I currently offer services such as permanent makeup (eyebrows, lips, freckles), brow and lash lifts, brow sugaring, tinting, and body art tattooing. When I’m not working with clients, I take on art commissions of all kinds! My portfolio feels ever growing and fluid. I currently work with merch (t-shirts, stickers, products), custom art, prints, logos and social media.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
One of the greatest joys in my work is the opportunity to empower people by turning their visions into reality. Whether it’s through a piece of art, a personalized design, or change in their look, I take immense satisfaction in seeing clients’ dreams come to life. It’s incredibly rewarding to know that my work can help individuals express their own unique perspectives and aspirations, and that I can be a part of their own creative journey.
Another deeply fulfilling aspect is the ability to contribute to people’s personal growth and self-confidence. Art and beauty has a unique power to inspire and uplift, and when clients engage with my work, I often see their self-assurance and sense of identity grow. Being able to play a role in this transformation is profoundly gratifying. I strive to create experiences and pieces that not only beautify but also encourage personal reflection and confidence.
Finally, the freedom to express my own thoughts, emotions, and ideas through my art is immensely rewarding. My craft allows me to explore and communicate aspects of myself that might be difficult to convey otherwise. It’s a form of personal expression that is both liberating and fulfilling, offering a unique outlet for creativity and introspection.
In essence, the intersection of empowering others, fostering their growth, and expressing myself makes being an artist not only a career but a deeply meaningful vocation.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
At the core of my mission is a commitment to constant growth—both as an individual and as a creative professional. I believe that the journey of self-improvement and learning never truly ends. Each project, challenge, and experience is an opportunity to evolve and refine my skills, perspectives, and understanding. By embracing this mindset, I strive to push the boundaries of my creativity, explore new techniques, and always stay inspired. This relentless pursuit of growth ensures that I remain engaged and passionate about my work, continually enhancing the quality and impact of what I produce.
Equally as important is my desire to look back and feel a deep sense of pride and satisfaction in what I’ve accomplished. My goal is to create work that not only meets high standards but also resonates with me on a personal level. Whether it’s through a successful project, a positive client experience, or a meaningful contribution to the art community, I want my creative journey to be marked by moments of accomplishment that reflect both my dedication and the positive impact I’ve had on others.
In essence, my mission is to blend personal growth with professional achievement, ensuring that my creative endeavors are not only fulfilling and transformative but also leave a lasting, meaningful impact.
