We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lauren Romero. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lauren below.
Alright, Lauren thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
I never envisioned myself as a business owner or risk taker, until life guided me in that direction. Prior to starting my own business, I had a great job at a worldwide travel magazine with tons of perks. In November 2019, we were all required to attend a mandatory call which lead to everyone being laid off due to the magazine ending. I was 7 months pregnant with my daughter and just heard I no longer had a job. Although everyone in the room was terrified, I was weirdly relieved. I knew I needed more- more passion, more risks, more challenges. During the 2020 lockdown, I watched my husband start his own business and it sparked a drive in me that I never knew I had. I watched him build his own dreams and I wanted to do the same. During 2020 with a newborn, I took social media courses, learned about starting a business and hired a team to build my website. I promised myself that I would go for it, follow this dream and accept the scared feelings that came with it. One year in, I still have to take risks, juggle the highs and lows of being a business owner and learn to pivot based on the never ending demands of the job. I wouldn’t change a thing and I am forever grateful for taking the risk that lead me here.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am the Owner and Founder of Pinkdoor Agency- a full service social media management and digital marketing company. We specialize in relieving our clients of the daily, sometimes daunting, task of running all social media platforms needed for businesses. We study their industry, the latest trends, and how to elevate their marketing. We also shoot their videos, photos and all of the content needed on a monthly basis. We edit videos for all of their social media platforms, create marketing graphics and build a community on their social media pages. I also use my personal social media to collaborate with brands for influencer marketing and brand partnerships. I have built a great TikTok following with many viral videos which provides many amazing partnership opportunities.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I started my social media journey on private with about 900 Instagram followers. I joined TikTok after much kicking and screaming that it was just a teenage dancing app. In March 2021, I decided that my personal social media needed to be stronger to start a social media business. By May 2021, I had videos that reached 16 million, 11 million, 13 million and more on TikTok. That grew my following to over 100,000 followers in 3 short months. My Instagram grew to 10,000 by July 2021 and is now over 25,000 a year later. I did this by studying the apps and the audiences on the apps. I found my niche and what people loved. I make all of my content relatable, authentic and “keep it real.” After 2020 and lockdown, the days of perfectly filtered, aesthetically pleasing content was over. People want to laugh, they want to see relatable struggles and want to say “that’s so me.” I never paid for followers. I never promoted my posts. It was very important to me to show organic growth for my social media agency business.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
As you can imagine, when you start a social media business with 900 followers on Instagram and 17 on TikTok people are going to doubt you. “What does she know about social media?” Reels were brand new and TikTok was still an app that people my age weren’t familiar with, so when I started posting these videos they received a lot of hate. I quickly learned that people hate on things they don’t understand. And it’s not their job to understand your personal journey and goals. I turned down many corporate offers (none of which I applied for) which also got criticism from people. But by May 2021, people started seeing my videos go viral, their friends started sending them my videos, I started appearing on podcasts and other big social media channels. Credibility helped reduce the “haters.” Understanding that people that doubt you, have no impact on your success helps you keep focused on what matters.
