We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lauren Purves. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lauren below.
Lauren , appreciate you joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
When I started getting paid for something I loved to do, that’s when I knew I even could do this professionally. I doubted my ability, like many creatives/artists, and was blocked by fear and insecurities. There were many circumstances that enabled me to fully commit to pursuing my creative path professionally, but I’ll keep it brief and simply say the people, places, and overall life source of the universe has a magical way of guiding you. You feel it in your body, you watch for signs, and you know that even when it’s super f*cking hard, that you’re on the right path.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a candid portrait and landscape photographer.
I’ve been shooting with my eyes for as long as I remember. I chase the light, capturing feeling and beauty – especially mundane and in-between moments. I would say this is the main differentiator of my work from others. I care deeply about what happens between the lens, the light, and the feelings it evokes. I encourage viewers to see the world around them with fresh eyes, inviting the viewer to find the little beauties in the every day.
Secretly or not so secret, my camera acts as a tool to scratch my ongoing sense of curiosity and exploration in the world – visually storytelling through my ongoing search.
When I work with clients they feed off my excitement for finding beauty. Beauty within themselves, their work, their need to share what they need to share by hiring me for whatever intention previously discussed. The shoot becomes play. This sense of play or flow state is particularly important in portrait shoots, often with people who aren’t very comfortable in front of the camera, they feel at ease knowing I will ensure we are creating something beautiful together. And we do.
I offer a subscription based photography service, creating consistent online content through eye catching photography. I have a background in marketing/branding which means I have the ability to understand your visual identity of your brand and ensure the way I shoot content is consistent and aligned.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
The value of creatives is often unmeasurable. One of the most valuable ways of expressing ourselves in this life is through creating art. Once society increasingly understands this, the world will flourish for the better.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn that you have to be one type of photographer or have a backbone foundation of technical understanding to do this professionally. The equipment you use, the technical education or degree, the names you worked with – this is all irrelevant. If you know how to honor your craft, keep going.
