Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lauren Patton . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lauren , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
How did you learn to do what you do? – I was around music from a young age, and I think I picked up on melody writing, and general song structure just taking it in at home, in chorus at school, and at camp.
– A lot of what I’ve learned in the past few years has been through the practice of frequent co-writing and being in songwriting communities such as SongTown
Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process?
– Put myself out there more, because that’s how you connect with people and find new opportunities. I’ve met collaborators when I’ve released my own music or by sharing songs I’ve written on social media
What skills do you think were most essential?
– Putting together or joining the right teams of people so there are all of the skills we need has been one of the most important skills; for example if I lean into melody writing, I like writing with strong lyricists and producers so that between us, we can get to a song that can be produced easily as well
– Being able to sing has been helpful on my songwriting journey because I am able to sing the songs we write, or share songs on social media
What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
– I’m balancing songwriting with having a family and work, so I’m always needing to pace!

Lauren , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a singer/songwriter based in Austin, TX and write songs for myself and with other Artists in the Country and Pop genres.
I started out writing songs for myself for fun and as a way to process life, like a musical journal. And then along the way, I’ve met other writers, communities, and Artists who are looking for partners on their projects.
I really enjoy writing with Artists because I can help them write the stories they want to tell, and give them support that they need as they balance writing, performing, recording, promoting — the list goes on. They have a lot on their plates.
I’d like to think I’m a good listener and follow the Artists lead versus take over. I think that’s important because the Artist usually feels they have something important they want to say in their music, and I like to keep the songs true to them.
I’m most proud of the songs I’ve released, and songs I’ve collaborated on with other Artists that they’ve released.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
There have been many times I’ve experienced set backs or highs and lows— It’s easy to get excited about opportunities and sometimes they don’t go as you hope.
I think the biggest thing is sticking with it. One way I do that is regular co-writes. It has been a few years of 2-3 writing sessions a week, no matter what else might be going on.
I feel productive even if an opportunity didn’t pan out, or I’m waiting to hear from someone etc.
I also try to stay in the moment versus always chasing the next moment. So if someone wants to record a song I’ve written on, or that we’ve written together, I let that be what fills me up. Someone resonates so much with the song that they want to record it. Versus thinking that them recording it is the moment I will be happy.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
It’s a very rewarding feeling to lean into who you are and to celebrate it, and to connect with other people who resonate with your music and may really need what you are sharing, in their life.
