Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lauren Metge . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Lauren thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
When my oldest was 1, I found out I was pregnant with twins. It was pure chaos 😂. I needed something creative to do, that no longer required physical material to create with. I have to create in some form to stay mentally healthy. So I decided I really wanted to learn Modern Calligraphy. I started with paper but hated wasting so much paper and saw others using an app called Procreate. Having an iPad made it so much easier to create and quickly put it away without any of my progress disappearing like it a would have with my crocheting and sewing out. I learned Modern Calligraphy but then realized I could make custom digital brushes for my calligraphy and art. I started making new brush sets and started selling them. Making $2500 profit one month, which made my new hobby feel even more fulfilling, because I could contribute to our growing family while staying at home. I now teach others how to make their own custom brushes at www.procreatebrushdesigner.com
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I serve two types of people. I sell Procreate brushes to creatives that use the app Procreate on the iPad. I was the first person to offer Alcohol ink brushes for the app and started to create even more brushes that no one had ever seen before, like glitter modern calligraphy brushes. Since creating these back in 2019 many have created their own versions of these. Which led me into my next venture. Helping creatives learn to create their own Procreate brushes by understanding what every brush setting does. Allowing them to create brushes perfectly tailored to the style of art they enjoy making. Procreate becomes a giant unlocked world when you can customize it to what style of art makes you fill with joy. I really love trying lots of styles and I get bored with making only one type of art. So getting to make hundreds of brushes for a varying amount of art styles made it so I never felt bored.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
In the beginning of my art journey, I loved learning how to make brushes. But it was a grueling process. It took a long time to fully understand how all of the settings worked to make brushes. YouTube was helpful, but a lot of the videos were out of date or only taught a couple of settings. I wanted to change that for others who would want to take the same creative path as me and now have a course that teaches everything I’ve learned about brush making over the last 6 years into just 1 week!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of being a creative is keeping my mental health sharp. Creating things that have never created before is incredibly fulfilling for me and keeps my brain feeling really happy. I HAVE to create and I have loved this area of creation because I can honestly say it has never once felt like work.
