We recently connected with Lauren Mays and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lauren, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Pretty early on I knew making art and telling stories with it was something I wanted to do. I first started taking commissions in 2015, and come 2016 I officially started up my business Robotic Pastries.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
When I was growing up, I would imagine scenarios of characters and stories all the time. I was inspired by many things, books, cartoons, video games, and would just sit back and let ideas play in my head. What got me doing art was my introduction to the early days of the internet. Sites like Youtube and Deviantart played a big part in getting me to draw a lot more after seeing what people were able to create of the things I enjoyed. I wanted to be able to artistically express my own ideas too.
As the years went on, I dipped my hand into many forms of creating. Writing, animation, illustration, and I love them all still to this day. However, the one that resonated with me the most, was comic books. It combined two things I had a passion for, writing and art, to make a form of storytelling with so many possibilities. I decided from then on that was what I wanted to do, create comics and tell stories of whatever cool ideas that cook up in my head. Be it original or fan work, I just want to tell stories.
That’s why I started up my business Robotic Pastries, for it to be a platform to use to share the stories I have with the world, as well as help others visualize their own unique ideas. Having an vision trapped in your head and not having the skill or method of being able to put it out is a terrible feeling. I want to help others release the creative vision God has given them, and not allow them to be held in limbo by providing the artwork and/or the ideas needed to bring them forward.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, I’d say being able to make my imagination a reality. Putting in the work to gain the skill and make the things you personally thought up, and seeing them come to life will always be an incredible feeling. I can make what I want to see, it’s not always easy but it is always possible.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
The goal driving me is to make the ideas I’ve been given. Over many years I’ve written down many, many, many ideas and still to this day am writing down even more. I want to build a team to share what I have for others to enjoy in the form of comics, animation, writing, and video games. Both ideas of my own and ideas to pitch for IPs I’ve always been inspired by.
