We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lauren Howe a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Lauren thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
I believe that success is a very personal experience that can only be truly defined by the individual. I believe that when you have identified what goals you are working towards, each milestone and step forward can be a success. I don’t view success as a goal you reach or a state you are in, but rather as the continued effort to achieve your expanding goals, whatever that looks like for you.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started The Social Block during the pandemic after noting a need for affordable digital marketing services. This was especially true among small business and nonprofits, who did not have access to the funding required to hire an agency. I saw many small businesses closing down throughout the pandemic, and wanted to help provide affordable services. The ultimate goal of The Social Block was to help these organizations stay competitive, make the switch to a more digital presence, and stay afloat during shutdowns.
The Social Block provides marketing, SEO, and social media services, and saw great success and growth throughout the pandemic.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing The Social Block’s clientele was by attending online networking events (during the pandemic) and in-person ones after. You cannot beat a face-to-face connection.
We also worked on growing our own social media, and optimizing our website to make it easy to find, use, and reach out. Both of these things helped grow our visibility and clientele organically.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
When The Social Block was first starting, it only offered social media services, making the capital required very low. We utilized programs for finding images, scheduling social posts, and tracking analytics, but the price point was relatively small compared to other start up costs. Once we had built out the clientele, we were able to use the revenue to invest into The Social Block even further, without sourcing funding from an external source.
