We recently connected with Lauren Goldblatt and have shared our conversation below.
Lauren , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So, what do you think about family businesses? Would you want your children or other family members to one day join your business?
Kickstart Reading is a family business and we love it. It was my brother Rob’s idea to start our company. I was hesitant as my background was in teaching, not starting up and running a company.
He said he would handle the website and tech side, and I agreed to give it a shot. It was a great decision.
We started a successful company and love working together. We live in different states and don’t get to see each other that often, but because of Kickstart Reading, we get to talk all the time and have become closer than ever.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Kickstart Reading started with short videos that teach children how to read. Our videos are super short, only 2-minutes each, to keep kids attention and leave them wanting more.
During the pandemic and with kids learning from home more than ever, we realized there was a need for more than just educational videos. So, we started creating hands-on activities and materials that get shipped directly to your door to help parents make learning at home a little easier. That transitioned into making education based games for kids – we like to make learning fun!
Best part of the job is the feedback we get from parents. They are so proud and happy to see their kids learning to read and I love seeing pictures and videos they send me of their children loving our videos and activities.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Word of mouth. Parents talk and that’s huge for us. We rely on parents to help us spread the word about Kickstart Reading. A parent will share on Instagram a picture or video of their child watching our videos, and it helps us grow and continue to make new sales. So many parents are shocked at how fast their kids start repeating words when prompted by the videos and begin reading the words they see on the screen. The parents see the excitement on their kids’ faces and share with friends how great their child is doing.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I love getting to create new activities throughout the year. We base a lot of the educational activities around the seasons and holidays. Children love holidays and it’s so easy to distract them with a fun printable that they enjoy. Kids don’t even realize they are learning, they just have fun doing each new themed activity.
