We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lauren Glover. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lauren below.
Alright, Lauren thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I have always been good with drawing, and basically anything with my hands. So I guess learning to create textured art was something that came second nature for me. Being honest, I don’t think I would want to have sped up the process. Each piece has helped me to learn more about myself, and therefore capture my free spirit within my art . With that being said, I think the skill most essential to my textured process has been to just go with the flow. In completing the lines and the different patterns within my art, if you stumble or hesitate, it shows. Therefore, going with the way my heart directs me and with the image that comes to mind is key.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a Florida transplant, currently residing in the Georgia area. For my full-time job, I am a healthcare worker, who travels quite a bit. My art is a way for me to escape my every day stress, even if only for a few minutes. I create textured art, which is made from plaster and paint. Creating for others is a way for me to relieve stress, but it’s also a way to share joy and ideas with others. I see creating as another way for me to assist and help people in a more creative light than I do in the healthcare realm. The biggest thing that sets me apart from those around me would be my desire to put my self within every piece of my art. Each piece of my art usually contains many lines and grooves. In addition, I like to adorn my pieces with small touches of gold. These things alone resemble my spirit of being a layered yet simple, and beautiful soul.
Raw Rose studio, was created in remembrance of my grandmother. She was a very creative and determined soul. When you thought, she did one thing very well, just know she had other things up her sleeve as well. She was very multifaceted and love to create things from clothes, to music. My grandmother loved roses, which is why my emblem includes a rose at its center.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For a while, I had some pieces up in a restaurant. My nephew saw them when going for dinner one day, and made a comment to my brother-in-law that he liked the art a lot. In response, my brother-in-law told him that I was the creator. My nephew’s response was, “ You mean, I know the master painter!?”. For him to say that about me, and my art was the biggest motivation to create more. The biggest motivation to try and get my art in more spaces. To know that people really like some thing that you made by hand is very rewarding and fulfilling. Especially when you do it more so for relief than anything else.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One thing that I think a lot of us struggle with is the idea that we have to be, or present our art a certain way. When I first began creating, I compared myself and my lack of success to a lot of creators I saw on Instagram. I had to learn to give myself grace, and get better with patience. I had to unlearn that I have to do certain things in a certain way in order to be successful. Everyone’s ‘success’ will look different, and that’s OK. I had to unlearn comparison when it came to my craft. Understanding that I am not the biggest social media person, it honestly didn’t make sense for me to aspire to be what I was taking in on social media. Every day I am learning to put this into practice, within my craft and in my personal life as well.
