We were lucky to catch up with Lauren Elizabeth recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lauren, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Anyone who owns a business understands the amount of risk and hard work that goes into being your own boss, late last year I decided to open my books as a makeup artist full-time and although it looks easy as I portray across my platforms I also share how it was super time-consuming and one of my biggest projects ever. Being both a creator and makeup artist has its struggles from being held to higher standards, and often can be a struggle building my clientele. I find that taking this risk was the best yet, the amount of opportunities that have been sent my way is unbelievable. One thing about risks, like mine, is that at first, it may seem like the worst risk ever, but I’ve learned along the way that some risks are a process of time and patience. The first couple months of my launching my business were very slow and money was being spent but no return after countless weeks of marketing my business. This has taught me to believe in my abilities because most people assume followers amount to clients but that is not at all true, you take a risk if people will book or won’t. It’s forced me to develop business acumen around a service-based business like makeup artistry which at the surface looks like content creation but is very different in application.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
A bit about me, I am a passionate makeup artist, college student, and content creator currently based in Houston. Growing up in this city has inspired my creativity and shaped my love for beauty and fashion. As a proud Latina, I embrace my heritage and aim to celebrate diversity in my work. In my role as a makeup artist, I enjoy experimenting with different styles and techniques, whether it’s for special events, bridal glams, or editorial projects. I believe makeup is a powerful form of self-expression, and I love helping others feel confident and beautiful. Alongside my artistic pursuits, I’m also diving into my studies, where I’m exploring the fascinating world of marketing as I am a senior finishing up at Sam Houston State with my Bachelor’s degree. A fun fact I’m particularly interested in how digital marketing helps me connect with my audience on a deeper level and I am a scorpio so of course my amigas love me for my realness. Through my content creation, I aim to share not just makeup tutorials and pro hacks but also insights into the struggles of work-life balance as a content creator full-time makeup artist, and then a college student.

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
As a beginner makeup artist, I wish I had known about the wealth of resources available earlier in my journey around 2022 when the idea of my business was just a thought. I would watch online tutorials on YouTube or masterclasses by other creatives in the industry helped me refine my skills as an MUA, while social media is a powerful tool for showcasing my work and connecting with potential clients alongside being a content creator I found that in the very beginning, many artists gatekept how to grow clientele and I wanted to make a change when it came to sharing my journey building my business.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I genuinely enjoy helping people, being able to do it creatively feels like a dream come true. I meet people often who say they are inspired by me or reference a video I have made that inspired them and it makes me so happy, little do they know this creates the perfect circle of inspiration for me. Those small interactions, dms, and comments can really make up for the long hours of filming, editing, and planning day in and day out.
