We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lauren Dunn. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lauren below.
Lauren, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I’ve always been sensitive to scents but loved the look and feel of a candle burning in an interior environment. The feeling that a space can be filled with any scent you want it to and that scent has a lasting effect, both physically and mentally. Scents are extremely important and have such connection to memories for me. I have worked to craft my custom scents to those that are significant and have meaning to me. It’s a bonus that other people love them too.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started making candles after taking a workshop in Maine in 2019. As a design major; I’ve always been very hands on and loved doing anything creative. This was a way for me to experiment with scents and wax to make a perfect combination – or at least work towards that.
The workshop had us use a coconut soy wax and wood wicks – two things that I never realized were possible with candles. We are used to seeing the traditional overly artificial scented and colored candles lining shelves. People are attracted to all those aspects. However, very little realize what health concerns burning artificial scents and coloring into your air can do. With using essential oil based fragrance blends and a soy based wax, I was able to produce not only great smelling candles but ones that were clean to burn in your home.
What I feel sets me apart is the variety is scents and how well the scent throws. Scent throw is when you light the candle and the scent begins to travel throughout your space. It tends to linger longer even if it is not burning as well. I love this aspect. The wood wick also provides a slight crackle sound and a bit of a more intense flame which sets it apart. The candles end up burning all the wax completely until the container is empty.
I am most proud of taking a chance outside of my full time career to produce candles and sell to as many individuals as I can. This isn’t a large production by any means but feel that I have had a significant impact within my community in Maine and now more so in Florida.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to create a great quality product for others to enjoy. Scents can be one of the most satisfying and memory provoking senses and the feeling of others enjoying my scents as I do gives me a lot of joy.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The feedback from individuals who use my product is the most rewarding for me. To hear that someone enjoys your candles and burns them daily is a great feeling. Knowing that people look forward to using your product as part of their daily routine is very fulfilling to me.
